MASSAGE APPARATUS.
,Application filed April 1, 1925. Serial No. 19,922.
' This invention relates to improvements in massage devices.
The primary object of the invention resides in a massage device for the skin which maybe passed thereover by the person desiring the massage and whlch 18 especially adapted for use as a head massage for agitating thescalp to excite the tissues which become clogged thereby tending to improve the growth of hair. However, the same may be used upon the face for removing wrinkles and other blemishes therefrom. I
Another object is to provide a massage apparatus having a spindle which is adapted to interchangeably receive massaging members ofdifferent forms depending upon the size and shape of the massage surface desired, and over which members, a flexible cover may be inserted for receiving a substance which in turn is imparted to the parts to be massaged. e
A further object resides in a massage apparatus which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and easy to disase semble for cleaning purposes and forinterchangeably receiving massage members of various shapes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a proved massage device with members removed.
Figure 2 is a. vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the massaging members in position.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of mounting a singlemassage member upon the spindle.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view -1nodified form of a massage member.
Fi 'ure 6 is a detail perspective view perspective view of my imthe massaging of a the medicated cover. 1
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved massage device which includes a frame 11 formed of a pair of sections 12 and 13. The sections 12 and 13 are formed of relatively heavy wire, the section 12 bemaybe a hollow ing bent to provide a relatively horizontally I disposed spindle 14 at one end and an upwardly extending arm 15 at its other end and to which a'manipulating handle-16 is attached. -The section 13 is similar to the sectlon 12 but one end of the same is provided with an eye 17 while the other end is adapted to lie parallel to the arm 15 and is provided with an eye'18 for receiving a bolt 19 which passes through the arm 15 and which sections are removably secured together by a" thumb nut 20 which coac'ts with the free end of the bolt.
A plurality of interchangeable rollers 21 are carried by the spindle 14 and are held thereon by athumb nut 22 which co-acts with the threaded end of the spindle which projects through the eye 17. These rollers may be formed of a solid material such as wood or rubber, and if desired the same cylinder to reduce the weight of the device. A stop 23' is formed on the spindle and the nut 22 co-acts with p the same to jam the rollers into tight engagement to provide a continuous massage surface. s i
The rollers 21 are provided with radially extending fingers 24. In the peferred'form, the fingers are formed of a yieldable material such as rubber, and if desired, the same may be of various lengths to provide a curved massaging surface to fit the contour of the parts to be massaged.
In applying the massaging members to the spindle, the thumb nut 22 is removed from the spindle and the nut 20 loosened to permit the section 13 to swing about the bolt 19 out of the path of movement of the massage members when the same are assed over the free end of the spindle. When the rollers have been applied,'the arm is moved to its former position and the thumb nuts tightened.
Should it be desired to have a. relatively small massage surface, the rollers may be removed with the exception of the one or ones desired to make up the massage surface.
. after which a spacing sleeve 25 is inserted on the spindle between the stop 23 and the end roller as shown in Figure 1. The
In Figure 5, I have shown a slightly modified form of the massage member indicated by the numeral 26 and which is formed of a sleeve 2? from which extend posts 28 having their free ends formed with heads 29. Cylinders 30 are slidable over the posts and lim ited in their outward movement by the heads 29. interposed between the end of each cylinder and the respective posts is'a'sprinq' 31 which is adapted to normally hold the cylinders in extended position but which are yieldable for movement when pressure is applied to the roller when in use.
In Figures 9- and 6, I have shown a flexible cover 32 which is adapted to be passed over the massaging" rollers when assembled on the spindle. and which is adapted to appl v medicinal substances to the parts to be massaged simultaneonsly with the massage action up by the fingers.
When in use, the user grasps the handle 16 and moves the device back and forth under pressure over the surface to he massaged to agitate the skin in order to excite the tissues for increasing circulation of the blood. It will be noted that various shapes of massaging members may be applied depending upon the size and shape of the massage surtace desired.
\Vhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention. it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I there fore do not limit myself to the exact details limited only by the appended claims.
hat is claimed as new is:
1. A. massage apparatus comprism; a
frame formed of a pair of pivotally connected sections. a spindle on one of said sections, rollers carried by said spindle adapted to swing in the same plane, the free end ot said other section engaging the end of said spindle, and a retaining nut removable from the tree end of said spindle for holding the rollers thereon.
A massage apparatus comprising a frame (-.onstitutin a pair 0t pivotally connected sections adapted to swing on the same plane. a spindle on one ot said sections having its tree end screw threaded. au abutment at one end of said spindle. a massage member rotatably mounted on said spindle. a sleeve encircling said spindle and interposed between said n'iassage member and said abutment. an eye on the tree end of the other 0t said sections tor the passage of the threaded end of said spindle. and a clamping nut co-aeting with the threaded end of said spindle for retaining said massage member and sleeve thereon.
In testimony whereof I have allixed my signature.
