Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.V
MILLER Gr. BELL, OF GLAEKSVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED WALL-PROTECTORS AN TOWEL-RAC-KS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,995, dated March 23, 1875; application filed December 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILLER G. BELL, of Clarksville, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wall-Protector and Towel-Rack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the an* nexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon;
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical sectional view of ymy device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to devices which are especially designed to be used in connection with a wash-stand for the purpose of protecting a wall against the injurious effects of spat-tering water. i
The object of the invention is to so construct a frame that it shall be readily attached to, and detached from, the stand when requisite for replacing the protecting towel, and so that the uprights may be used to sustain a number of horizontally-vibrating toweL racks; and the novelty consists in the cornbination of certain devices, hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a cloth screen, buttoned in any suitable manner to a frame, B, consisting of two uprights, a., and'two or more horizontal braces, b, the cloth A and its frame B constituting a wall-protector, in connection with which I propose to show my improved method of attaching the same removably to a wash-stand, and of applying two or more horizontally -vibrating arms or racks, E, to the uprights of the same. This removable attachment I accomplish by means of flat metallic spring-hooks D, one of which is rigidly secured to the lower ends of the uprights a of the frame, which are adapted to be hooked over the back-board of a wash-stand, the gripe of the said hooks being of such strength as to hold the protector against all casual displacement, and yet allow the same to be readily lifted off the said back-board when, from any cause,` such removal becomes necessary, as, for instance, to remove a soiled screen and substitute a clean one without moving the stand itself from its place.
The great advantage of my improved protector is, that it is applied to the stand itself, is readily detachable therefrom, and that in consequence of such arrangement I am enabled to do away with nails or tacks in common use for securing towels or other screens to the wall, whereby the same is greatly defaced.
E designates racks or arms, which are pivoted to the uprights a in the following manner, to wit: An annular recess is cut into one or both of the uprights a of the frame, into which are applied metallic clamps F, consisting of a cylindrical portion, i, formed in one end of the same, and adapted to embrace and conform to the contour of the recess, and of two legs, i', in the shape of segments of a cylinder. Over these legs I then pass a cylindrical ferrule, Gr, whereby the clamp F is rigidly confined in its recess, and a socket is afforded to the arm E, into which it is now inserted, and rigidly held by means of suitable rivets j.
By this construction I am enabled, while obtaining a perfectly easy vibratory action of the said rack, to utterly prevent its sagging' under the weight ot' a number of towels.
In practice I may apply a thin metal covering to the vertical walls ofthe recesses in the uprights, for the purpose of preserving the same from undue wear.
I propose, also, to use spring hooks D', (shown in Fig. 1,) for the purpose of removably attaohing a looking-glass, H, to the upper horizontal brace b of the frame, whereby it is adapted to be detached when necessary, or to be vibrated into a horizontal position, out of the way of being spattered while the stand is in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined wall-protector and towel-rack, consisting of the uprights a. a, provided with clamping-springs D D, buttons o c, cross-bars b b, and towel-arms E E, pivoted to bars al a by the clasps F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
M. G. BELL.
