This invention relates to locks, and more into position to either release or connect the 60 particularly to padlocks of the safety or free end of a chain therewith; one end of a thief-proof type having a chain attached for chain being permanently secured thereto; securing various articles so that they may and 5 not be easily stolen, for example, by lock- Fig. 4 is a detail view showing in full lines ing together the two ends of the chain which the bendable lug on the inner side of the main may embrace an automobile spare tire or body portion of the shackle between which other article to be secured against theft. and one limb of the shackle one end of a 'It is common practice to secure one end chain is permanently secured, as shown in W of a chain to a padlock for various uses to Flgs. l and 3, by bending said lug toward which such'locks with a chain attached may the adjacent limb; the form of the lug after be ut especially for out. door heavy duty bending being indicated in dotted lines. requirements, by securing one end of a chain Referring to said drawings, in which the to a olevis-like device adapted to embrace same reference letters are used to denote cor- 15 a li k f th h i d th i ti hresponding parts in different views, the letdevice to the shackle, or to a lug or pro ter A may denote a padlock case, which jection formed integrally with the case, or may be of the form shown or any suitable by securing the two limbs of the clevis-like construction. It has pivoted thereto a device with the chain attached in a recess shackle B Of yoke-like f01ID,Witl1 depending 20 in the ase yvhen the everal parts are as Z), Z91 and intermediate lugs b and b sembled and riveted together; all of which for a purpose hereinafter described. The operations are more or less expensive and limb b of the yoke is fitted in a recess proincrease th t f n fa tur vided therefor at one side of the case between The objects of my invention are to provide the two side plates or members a and a 55 a padlock with a shackle which will serve Which, are secured together by riveting as as a means for attaching thereto one end al When all the parts are properly as- 76 of a chain which may be passed around an mhled, and the limb b is pivotally searticle to be secured against theft by lockcured in said recess by means of a pin or ing together the two ends of the chain thus rivet 0, while the free end portion 01 limb 30 dispensing with the clevis-like devices and b is provided with a notch c to receive an riveting means heretofore employed for seinterlocking part of an ordinary spring- 80 curing a chain to a padlock, and reducing pressed locking device within the case with the cost of manufacture of padlocks with a which the shackle arm contacts when pressed chain attached while producing a highly into the case so as to cause said device to 35 useful and durable theft-proof device for recede and permit the limb of the shackle the purposes mentioned. to enter the case for engagement of the notch The invention will first be hereinafter therein with said interlocking device, wheremore particularly described, with reference by the shackle will be firmly locked to the to the accompanying drawings, which are to case by contact of said interlocking part with be taken as a part of this specification, and the shoulder formed at the base of said then pointed out in the claims at the end of notch. The case and the locking mechanism the description. contained therein may be of any suitable In said drawings, Fig. 1 represents a secconstruction, such as commonly used in the tional side elevation of a padlock embodyconstruction of padlocks, in which a key ing my invention, showing fragmentary poris adapted to be inserted in a. key-hole for tions of two ends of a chain locked together; retracting the spring-pressed locking device Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; to disengage the shackle in a well known Fig. 3 is'a side elevation of the padlock manner, said key-hole having a swinging with the shackle unlocked and thrown back cover 66*. Inasmuch as no claim is made herein to the case or to the locking mechanism per se, no further description of the case or the locking mechanism therein appears to be necessary. The shackle is so formed as to leave as little space as possible between it and the case for the insertion of a jimmy or other tool for prying the lock open. It may be either round, oval or square in cross-section and it may be cast or otherwise formed out of any suitable metal,
such as brass, bronze, 'maleable iron 'or' steel. The lugs Z2 and b on the lower or inner side of the main body portion of the shackle provide a suitable recess :between-each-lug and the adjacent limb of the shackle tor the link of a chain to snugly fit therein-,and the lug at the right-or adjacent the pivoted end of the shackle islongenough to adapt it to be swaged or bent back over the chain tion to any' part-icular use, andit may beused for variouspurposes and indifferent relations, wherever 1t is desired to use a-padlock with a cham 'attached', especially tor all out door-heavy duty requirements; where padlocks are adapted to be' -used.
