ISIDORE KODISH, o BRooKLYN, NEW YORK.
ooMBINA'rIoN-rAD ocK.
To all whom/it may concern: I
Be it known that I, lslnonn Konisi-r, a citizen oi"- the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Padlocks,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to permutation locks, particularly to those of the padlock variety, and has for its" object the provision of a padlock having a slidable shackle and provided with a plurality of balls or other protuberances extending entirely around its edges, links and catch members being pro-.
vided within the body of the link connected with certain of the protuberances whereby upon pulling out certain protuberances 1n proper sequence, the shackle will be released.
'An important object is the provision of a lock of this character which isparticularly designed to battle any attempt of an unauthorized person to open the same so that the lock will be to all intents and purposes theft-proof as it is necessary to know which protuberances to pull upon to efiect-releas' ing of the shackle.
An additional oh ect is the provision of a lock of this character which willbe simple and inexpenslve in manufacture, easy tO'Opcrate when the secret of --1nan1pulat1on is Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts in released position.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, I have shown the look as comprising a casing 10 and U-shaped shackle 11 havingits arms 12 and 13 slidable through holes let in the casing. Cast or secured upon the outer edges of the casing 10 are proturberances 15 which may be "of any desired shape such as spherical. as shown. These protuberances have no function other than to baille any attempt of an unauthorized person to open the lock.
position. Pivotally latch arm 23 is a-stem 26 which extends Specification of Q'JettersPatent. Patented 24, 192() Application filed October 31,1919. Serial N o. 334,721. I
Disposed within the casing10 is a bolt 16 with'which engages, one end of a coil spring 17 which extends through a bore 18 in the arm 12 of the shackle whereby the shackle is normally urged into released position. The end of the arm 13 which extends into the casing is peripherally recessed, as shown at 19, to provide an arrow-like head 20.
Pivoted within the casing 10, as shown at 21, are latch arms 22 and 23 which are normally drawn together by a coil spring 24 and which have their free ends 25 engaging within the recess 19 for holding the shackle in locked connected with the slidably through the edgeof the casing and which carrlesextern'ally thereof a protuberance 27 identlca-l with the protuberances 15.
A coil spring 28 surrounds the stem 26 and abuts against the arm 23 and the inner wall, of the casing for normally holding the head 27 in retracted position. Pivotally connected with the arm 22 is a link 29 which is pivotally connected at its free end with a lever 30, pivoted at'31, and having pivotally connected with its other end, as shown at a stem 33, slidable through the edge of the casing and carrying a head 34 identical with the protuberances 15. Extending laterally from the stem 33 is a proJection 35 which normally engages one end 36 of ananglc lever 37 pivoted at. 38, within the casing.
Pivotally connected with the other arm of the angle lever 37, as shown at 39, is a link 40, which is in turn pivotally connected at 41, with one end of a lever 42 pivoted intermediate its ends, as shown-at 43, within the casing. Pivotally connected with the other end of the lever 12 is a stem 44 which eX- tends slidably through the opposite edge of the casing and which carries a head 45 identical with the protuberances 1 5. The normal or locked position of the parts is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In the operation of the device when it is desired to open the lock, that is release the shackle 11 from engagement Within the casing, it is first necessary that the operator grasp the head 45 and pull outwardly thereon, whereupon the lever 42 will rock upon its pivot 43, resulting in movement of the I link 10 and'swinging of the angle lever-37 upon its pivot38. As this is done, the arm 36 of the angle lever 37 will be moved out ofengagement with the proje tion 35 on the stem 33. The operator then grasps so that the head on the arm 13 of the shackle will pass through the hole. 14 and between the ends of the arms 22 and 23. From the v foregoing description and a I study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided an o extremely simple and efficient combination padlock which needs nokey whatever and which willbe very effective in" preventing theft.
While I have, shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to beunderstood that I reserve the right to make suchchanges in, they form,
construction, and arrangement of. parts. as
wvill not depart. from the spirit of the in ventionvor the scope of thesubjoinedclaims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: a
1. A lock comprisinga casing, a shackle extending into the casing and having the enduof one arm formed with a retaining head, a pair of latch arms pivoted Within said casing and spring-pressed normally into engagement with said head, a stem connected with one latch arm and-extending 1 through the casing, a second stemslidable through the casing and connected with the other latch arm, cooperating latch means normally holding said second named stem against movement, a third stem connected with said latch means and extending through the casing, -finger engaging heads on the stems exteriorly of the casing, and a plurality'o f protuberances on said casing corresponding in size and shape to said heads,
outward pulling of said heads in proper se quence resulting in disengagement of said latch arms from the'shackle.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a U- shapedshackle slida bly associated with said casing and having one arm spring-pressed whereby the shackle will normally be disposed with its other varm out ot the cast ing,.a: retainingshead on said other-arm of the shackle, a. palr oflatcharms engaging said head and normally spring-pressedto-v gether, a stem connected with one of said' arms and extending slidably through the casing,a support within the casingya jlever pivoted upon said support a link-,pivotally connected with, one end ofsaid leverxa nd with the other latch arm, a gstempivotally connected-with the other end, ofsaid, lever, slidable through said casing, and ,provided with a lateral shoulder, an angle lever pivoted within said casing and having; one end normally engaging said shoulderswhereby to permit movement ofsaid, second named stem,a lever pivoted within said casing and connected at one end with the other end of said angle lever, athird stem pivotally connected with the other end of said last named lever and extendingslidably through the casing, heads on the outer endsof said stems, and a plurality of protuberanceson the casing'identical in appearance with the heads.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature.
