UMBRELLA LOCK.
Application filed. April 26,
T 0 a? Z 1071 omit may concern Be it known that I, LEE SHOEMAKER, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient locking device for umbrellas, canes and similar objects adapted for use in connection with racks such for example as are employed for the reception of umbrellas in hotel lobbies, restaurants and other public places where wraps are usually deposited on the entrance of the wearer or owner for redemption on leaving, and the particular object is to provide a means whereby an article of the type indicated may be definitely locked and secured against surreptitious or accidental re moval by any other than the rightful owner, and also to provide a simple means of ident-ilication of the property which may be retained by the owner during the interval that the article is left in the rack; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a general view of an umbrella rack having locking means constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 9 is a detail view of the locking device showing an umbrella secured therein.
Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Figure 4t is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line ll of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a detail view of thecombined key and check.
The device consists essentially'of casing 10 provided with an opening 11 having a reduced throat 12, a disk 13 revolubly mounted upon a center 14 within the casing and having a threat 15 for registration with that of the opening in the casing and bounded by a jaw 16 adapted when the disk isin an adjusted position to bridge and form a closure for the throat of the opening in the casing, and locking means for securing the disk in its adjusted position. a contractile coil spring 17 being arranged to yieldingly hold said disk in its normal position with 1921. Serial N0. 464,708.
the throat thereof in registration with that of the casing. W hen it is desired to leave an umbrella or cane in the rack the handle or shank thereof is inserted through the throat of the easing into that of the locking disk and is then moved laterally to revolve the disk and position the handle in that portion of the opening of the casing which is offset from the throat, and the incident movement of the disk swings the jaw thereof into closing relation with the throat of the opening in the casing so as to effectually confine and secure the handle of the umbrella or equivalent device against removal. In the construction illustrated the means for holding the disk in its retaining position consist of a spring arm 18 carried by the easing in the path of a bevelled cam 19 on the disk, said cam having an abrupt shoulder 20 for engagement with the spring arm when the locking disk reaches its adjusted position, and said spring arm which is secured at one end, for example, by the screw 14 constituting the pivot of the disk is received at its free outer end in a seat 21 in the depending flange 22 of the casing in the path of a key 23 insertable into a socket 24. The insertion of the key which also is designed to perform the function of a check as a means of identifying the locking device to which it belongs and hence the umbrella or cane which is locked therein is designed to depress the free end of the locking arm to disengage it from the cam and thus release the disk for return. to its normal position when the handle of the umbrella or cane may be withdrawn from the seat therein.
It is desirable that the key or check should be normally retained in the lock and be removable therefrom only after the lock has been adjusted to secure an umbrella or other object therein, and to this end a key locking means is carried by the disk and consists of a tongue 25 for engagement with a notch 26 in the edge of the key when the disk is in its normal position. The turning of the disk to lock an umbrella handle moves said tongue out of engagement with the notch and thus releases the key or check, and the return of the key or check to its socket and its depression with sufficient force to deflect the locking arms results in the release of the disk to permit of the removal of the umbrella.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is 1- 1. A device for the purpose described having a casing provided with an elongated opening for the reception of an umbrella or cane handle and provided with an entrance throat, a disk revolubly mounted in the easing and having a throat registe'able with that of the casing and an adjacent jaw for closing the throat of the casing, a spring for yieldingly holding the disk in its normal position, a spring arm carried by the casing, and a cam carried by the disk for engagement with the said arm when the disk is moved to its throat closing position.
2. A device for the purpose described having a casing provided with an elongated opening for the reception of an unibrellaor cane handle and provided with an entrance throat, a disk revolubly mounted in the easing and having a throat registerable with that of the casing and an adjacent jaw for closing the throat of the casing, a spring for yieldingly holding the disk in its normal position, a spring arm carried by the casing,
and a cam carried by the disk for engage- -ment with the said arm when the disk is movedto its throat closing position, said casing having a key socket intersected by said spring arm. n
3. A device for the purpose described having a casing provided with an elongated opening for the reception of an umbrella or cane handle and provided with an entrance throat, a disk revolubly mounted in the casing and having a throatregisterable former is in its normal position.
4-. A device for the purpose described having a casing provided with an elongated opening for the reception oi an umbrella or cane handle and provided with an entrance throat, a disk revolubly mounted in the casing and having a throat registerable with that of the casing and an adjacent jaw for closing the throat of the casing, a spring for yieldingly holding the disk in its normal position, a spring arm carried by the casing, and a cam carried by the disk for engagement with the said arm when the disk is moved to its throat closing position, said casing having a key socket intersected by said spring arm, in combination with an identifying key for reception by said socket, and a key locking tongue carried by the said disk for engagement with a notch in the key when the disk is in its normal position.
In testimony whereof he atfiXeshis signature.
