ELTSEA STEVENS, oE CEoMwELL, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-PENDANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,968, datedMarch 16, 1875; application tiled February 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ELISHA STEVENS, of Cromwell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-Pendants; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to pendant-frames having a Shade for gas and lamps; and iny invention consists in attaching a crown to the vertical branches ot' the frame by means of lugs, in combination with a shade having a iianged top for suspending it from the crown, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is,
a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal Section, taken in the line 0c 0c of Fig. 1.
The pendant-frame is of the ordinary construction, except that the top is open, as the upper ends of the branches AA are not joined together. In the upper portions ot' these branches are lugs a a, for attaching the shade-supporting crown. The crown B is of circular form, and may be made all in one piece oi' in two scmicircular pieces. When made in one piece it is provided with recesses for engagement with the lugs a, and when made in two pieces it is formed with lugs for attaching ,it to the lugs a by means of screws. The shade C, to which this invention is particularly applicable, is formed with an outwardly-projectn g flange, c, for attaching it to the crown. When the crown is made in one piece its smallest dimensions are sufficient to allow the ianged top of the shade to pass through, and it is provided with set-screws for engagement with said liange to attach the shade to the crown. When the crown is made in two pieces each ofthe Semicircular halves is provided with an inwardlyprojecting rim, for engagement with the iian ged top of the Shade to attach it to the crorwn, s o that the shade is supported by the crown when the two halves are attached to the pendant-frame. is particularly adapted to lamps, and is provided with a socket, E, for holding a lamp; but it may be so modied' as to be readily adapted to a gas-burner, and the shade-supporting crown may be as readily applied to one as to the other. To the upper ends of the branches A A are attached the lower ends of chains G, the upper ends of which are attached to a yoke, H. On the upper edge of the yoke is a ring or eye, h1, for suspending it from the ceiling, and on the lower edge is a hook, h2, for attaching a bell, such as is generally used over the dame of a lamp or gasburner.
By this construction and arrangement the suspension of the pendant may be regulated to correspond with the height of the room by providing longer or shorter chains, as may be found necessary, and the bell may be suspended at any desired height above the tlame.
It is obvious that adjustable or variable rods or links may be substituted for the chains G. The yoke may be suspended from the ceiling by a chain, or directly by a hook, according to the height of the room.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iis- 1. The crown B, attached to and between the vertical branches A of the pendant-frame, in combination with the shade C, suspended from said fixed crown, as and for the purpose described.
2. The crown B, connected to the vertical branches A A by the lugs a a of the pendantframe, in combination with the shade C, having the projecting flanged top c, for suspending it from the crown, substantially as and for the purpose described.
