CH ECK STRAP FOR DOORS.
Application filed "December 6, 1924. Serial No. 754,289.
Our invention relates to checks for swinging doors whereby the door may be prevented from being swung too far outwardlyon its pivot or hinge thereby avoiding possible injury or breakage to the pivot or hinge or other connection.
The principal object of the invention is the production of a door check of the character described which shall be of simple construction and which shall not interfere with the normal-closing of the door.
A further object of the invention is the production of a door check of the character described which maybe shipped as a unit whereby the installation thereof is facilitated.
Still a further object of the invention is the production of a door check of the above character which shall 'be provided with a bumper of simple and novel construction adapted to absorb the shock of too forceful an opening of the door thereby obviating injury to its'hinge or pivot.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel door check hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to the door and one of its frame members showingthe door in open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door in closed position.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device per se.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates a portion of a side of a door or a side member thereof while 2 indicates the adjacent stationary wall or frame to which the door is hinged or pivoted as by the hinge 3. The door 1, on the inner face thereof at the meeting edge of that face and the adjacent forward face, is provided with a cut-out portion or squared slot t while the frame 2 on the inner face thereof, also at the meeting edge of that face and the adjacent forward face, with an elongated cut-out portion or slot 5. Fastened to the forward face ofthe door 1 by suitable screws or otherwise is plate 6 of the door check. Said plate is provided with a lateral perforatedflange 7 extending at right angles thereto into the slot 4. 1 i
8 indicates a wire strap the upper end of which extends through the perforation in the flange 7. and is provided with a head 9' therewith and passing through suitable openings in the frame 2. The outer ends of said extensions are screw-threaded as shown and receive nuts 13, said extensions being also provided with collars 14c to prevent-said eX- tensions from being pulled too far through the openings in the frame 2 whereby the rod 11 will be rigidly held in position, as is obvious, when *the nuts are tightly screwed against the outer side face of the frame 2.
The lower end of the wire strap 8 is looped as at 15 and is adapted to ride on therod 11. 16 indicates a compression spring coiled around the upper part of the rod 11, the upper end of which is fastened to the upper collar 1 1 or to a point adjacent said collar. Said compression spring is adapted to be engaged by the loop 15. If so desired the opening 4: at one side and the plate (3 may be covered and hidden from view by a plate 17 extending across the door and forming a part of a wall thereof while the opening 5 may be also covered and hidden from view by any suitable covering (not shown).
Assuming the door to be closed or in the position shown in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the wire strap 8 extends downwardly intermediate the slot between the door and its frame 2, it being enabled to assume this position because of the bend 10. lVhen in this position the loop 15 assumes a position adjacent the lower end of the rod 11. When the door is opened the loop 15 rides upwardly on the rod 11 until it strikes the spring 16 compressing it upwardly, said spring acting to absorb the shock of the opening thereby preventing a possible injury to or breakage of the hinge 3. As the door is opened 2 V reoaeee the upper end of the wire strap 8 will rotate in the perforation in the flange 7 in an obvious manner.
What we claim as our invention is 1. In an apparatus of'the character described, a wall, a member swingingly secured thereto and a check stra connected to said wall and said member and having one end adapted to rotate while the other end simultaneously effects a vertically sliding movement when said member is swinging from or towards said wall. 7
2. In an apparatusof the character described, a wall, guiding means thereon, a member hinged to said wall, a wire check strap secured to said member and said guiding means and capable of a vertical sliding movement on said guiding means and a spring on said guiding means adapted to be compressed by said check strap when said member is swung on its hinge, ,aid check strap lying in a substantially vertical position intermediate said wall and a side of said member when said member is in closed position.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a wall, a door connected to said wall and adapted to be swung away there from and a wire check strap connectedto said wall and door to limit the swingiiig movement o1 said door and capable of arotary movement at one connection and a sliding movement at the other, said check strap being also adapted to lie intermediate the space between said wall and door when the door is in closed position adjacent the wall.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, 21 wall, a swinging door hinged thereto, a plate on said door, a vertically extending rod secured to said wall and a wire check strap connected to said plate and capable of a sliding movement on said rod and adapted to limit the movement of said door, said check strap lying in a substantially vertical position intermediate said wall and a side or" said door-when said door is in closed position.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, a wall, a door hinged thereto, a perforated plate fastened to said door, a vertically extending rod secured to said wall, and a wire check strap having one end extending through the peri o-rationin said plate and the other end looped around said rod and capable of a sliding movement thereon;
6. In an apparatus or" the character 'described, a wall, a door hinged thereto, a per- -torated plate fastened to said door, a rod secured to said wall, a wire check strap having one end extending through the perforation in said plate and provided with a head thereon and the other end looped around said rod and capable of a sliding movement on said rod and a bend in said check strap adjacent its headed end.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, a wall provided with a slot therein,
a door hinged to said wall and provided with a slot therein, a plate mounted in said slot in said door, a rod mounted in said slot.
in said wall. and a wire strap connecting said plate and said rod and adapted to limit. the swinging movement of said door.
8. ln an apparatus of the character described, a wall, a swinging door hinged thereto, a vertically extending rod on said wall provided with extensions extending therethrcugh, means carried by said extensions for holding them to said wall, a spring on said rod and a check strap connected to said door a? d slidably mounted on said rod.
9. in an apparatus of the character described, a wall, a member hinged thereto and a check strap connected to said wall and said member having one end-thereof adapted to rotate while the other end issimultaneously moved vertically when said member is moved on its hinge.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State or" New York this 4th day of December A. D. 1924.
