r This invention relates to door checks of the typeadapted to besused-fin connection with `the doors of automobiles and similar vehicles,"and has for its object the provision ofa simple, ef# cientla'ndimproved check of this character which -is VcompactlyV associated with: `and forms a part ofthe hinge unit assembly.
Theiinvention is fully described in the followingr Vspecification, and` whileV in4 its broader aspectit is capableof embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated" in the .accompanying drawings, in whichfffy w Y H 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge embodying the invention in mounted relation to a door and frame-post whichl are fragmentarily shown in open relation, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical fragmentary section taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, with parts in full.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an automobile door and 2 the pillar or post of the associated body frame to which the door is hung by a set of hinges, the lower one 3 of which is shown.
This hinge is of the double leaf type commonly used for the hanging of automobile doors and each leaf is provided with a .slot 4, which is disposed lengthwise of the leaf from near its inner end to a point adjacent to its outer end and in register with the other slot/.when the hinge is in closed position.
The check means embodying the invention comprises a pair Vof links 5 and 6 that are pivotally connected at their inner ends, a third link 7 that is pivotally connected, in the present instance, to the outer end of the link V6, and a cushion or shock absorbing spring 8 mounted on the link 7, the axes of the link pivots being parallel to the axis of the hinge pivot.
The link 5, in the present instance, has its outer end projected outwardly through the outerend portion of the slot 4 of the hinge leaf a, which is the one attached to the door, and is pivoted to the hinge leaf at the door side thereof, as to a block 9 secured thereto, so that the link may swing into and out of the slot.
The link 6 has the end thereof opposed to the link 5 projecting through the outer end link Vl7 PAliste-eme:
portionlof the slot 4 in the hinge lea-f. b i' j pivotallyattached to the link `7 normally at the postjside .of the leaf, the link being shown as of rodform and having at its inner end a right angled bend, which pivotally engages an eyeinthe link. The spring 8 encircles the link 7 vwithone end thrustv against a blocklO` attached to theleaf and with Vthe outerend thrust thereof against a shoulder 11v on the link, which shoulder may be a nut threadedV on the link to permit adjustment :of the ten-` sion of the spring.` lA pull exerted on the link 6 through 'the -linkr 'causes a movementof the link 7 through aflaterally. enlarged portion 12 of the associated slot`4 to an extent permitted by thespring. The blocklO is also slottedto' receive the end ofthe link 6 and toV permit the projection, therethrough ofthe .The links 5 and 6. are of thin form so theyertical space occupied thereby is a comparatively small portion of thevertical'depth ofthe hinge leaves. The slot 4 in which the links fold may, therefore, be narrow and not efect any seriousweakening ofthe hinge. f The kinner Vend ofone of the links 5, 6, is provided with3 a stop lug 13, which engages the-,other link to prevent the linksfrom completely straightening outnwhen the hinge is opened, 'which` would cause .a locking of lthe hinge against closing until the links are again broken. 1' At i' Y 1t is evident thatthe` check-means is disposed at practically the free ends Vof the hinge yleaves and that the'mortise 14v in which the link 7 and lspring 8 ,are disposed is at the innerside of the post 2 and easyv of access to adjust the nut for tensioning the spring or for theremoval of parts for replacement or repair. V
,the slots 4,` It is ypreferable to have theo'uter endl portions fof the links; 5 p and' V6 slightly thatithe opening movement I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a hinge having leaves adapted to close in substantially close parallel relation and each having a longitudinally disposed slot therein extending to near the outer ends of the leaves, a pair of check links foldably hinged together and one having its outer end projecting through the outer end portion of the slot of one leaf and pivotally attached to such leaf and the other link having its outer end projected through the outer end portion of the slot of the other leaf, a third link pivotally attached to the free end of said second link and projecting away from the outer side of the associated hinge leaf, and a spring mounted on said third link and coacting with it and the adjacent hinge leaf to cushion a pull exerted by the other links, said second and third links being adapted to lie in said `slots when the hinge is in Closed position.
2. In combination, a hinge having leaves adapted to close in substantially close parallel relation and each having a longitudinally disposed slot therein, a pair of cheek links pivoted together at their inner ends and each having its outer end projected through the outer end portion of the slot of a respective leaf of the hinge and one being pivoted at its outer end to the associated hinge leaf, a third link pivoted to the free end of said outer link and having a stop shoulder thereon, a compression spring mounted on said third link with one end thrust against said shoulder and its other end thrust against the outer side of the associated hinge leaf to act through the links to yieldingly check an opening of the hinge when it has been opened a predetermined extent, the several connecting pivots of said links being parallel to the connecting pivot of the hinge leaves and the two first links being folded one over the other Within the leaf slots when the hinge is closed.
3. In combination, a hinge having leaves adapted to close in substantially close parallel relation and each having a longitudinally disposed slot therein, a pair of check links pivoted together at their inner ends and each having its outer end projected through the outer end portion of the slot of a respective leaf of the hinge and one being pivoted at its outer end to the associated hinge leaf, a third link pivoted to the free end of said other link and having a stop shoulder thereon, a compression spring mounted on said third link with one end thrust against said shoulder and its other end thrust against the outer side of the associated hinge leaf to act through the links to yieldingly check an opening of the hinge when it has been opened a predetermined extent, the several connecting pivots of said links being parallel to the connecting pivot of the hinge leaves and the two lirst links being folded one over the other within the leaf slots when the hinge is closed, said irst mentioned links having provision for stopping their opening movements before they have assumed a completely straightened out position.
4. The combination with a hinge having leaves adapted to close in substantially close parallel relation and each having a slot therein, of a yielding check for the hinge comprising a pair of links pivotally connected together with the outer end of one link pivoted to one leaf of the hinge near its outer end, and means yieldingly connecting the outer end of the other link to the other leaf near its outer end, said links being adapted to fold together and to lie in said slot when the hinge is in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
