Application filed July 23,
This invention relates to improvements in carpenters squares and has special reference to that type of carpenters square commonly termed a steel square.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a steel square having an improved attachment thereto for laying off bevels at various angles with the edges thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a steel square of that class wherein the arrangement will be such that by an improved means without disturbing the ording ry blade of the square a bevel may be laid o A still further object of the invention is to provide a square of the above indicated character, which is simple in construction,
durable, eiiicient for the purpose intended,
and one that can be manufactured and placed on sale at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description proceeds and as is specifically pointed'out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which forms a part ofthis specification and which clearly shows the construction of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a square constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of same and Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the dilierent views.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the head of my improved square, and the numeral 6 designates the blade, which can be either formed integral with the head 5 or attached thereto in any suitable manner. It is to be understood that both the head and blade are constructed either of wood or metal, whichever is deemed the most desirable.
The head and blade at the point of intersection are provided on each side with a protractor 7 concentric with the intersection of the inner edges of the head and blade and pi votally connected directly in the center of the protractor as at 8 is a movable blade 9. The upper edge 10 of the blade 9 is flush with the edge 11 of the blade 6, when same is in the position shown by full lines in Figure 2.
Then it is desired to use my improved tool 1923. Serial No. 653,242.
as a miter square, it is merely necessary that the movable blade 10 be moved upon its pivot 8 so that the portion of the movable blade as indicated by the numeral 12 will indicate on the protractor 7 the degree to which the movable blade 9 is extended. In order to assist in moving and securing the blade 9, a lever 13 is formed and threaded to act as a retainer, as is clearly seen in Figures 1 and 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple square, which is so constructed that it may be used as a try square or readily shifted into position for use as a miter square without the necessity oi removing it from engagement with an edge in which it is in contact and without the use of adjusting screws or other devices.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, and there for, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangen'ient of parts.
What I claim as new and novel and of practical advantage is;
1. A square comprising a head portion and a blade portion having inner edges disposed at a right angle with relation to each other and having an inwardly disposed portion bridging the space between the inner edges of the head and blade portions at the apex of the angle, a pivot mounted upon the square at the inwardly disposed bridging portion, the inner edges of both the head portion and the blade portion being radially disposed with relation to the axis of'the pivot, and a blade movably mounted upon the pivot and having an edge radially disposed with relation to the axis of the pivot said blade having an upstanding lever formed thereon and disposed radially with relation to the pivot.
2. A square comprising a head portion and a blade portion having inner edges disposed at a right angle with relation to each other and having inwardly disposed portion bridging the space between the inner edges of the head and blade portions at the apex of the angle, a pivot mounted upon the square at the inwardly disposed bridging portion, the inner edges of both the head portion and the ing an edge radially disposed With relation to the axis of the pivot, said blade having an upstanding lever formed thereon pivot, one side surfeoe of the lever being -flnsh with the radially disposed edge of the movable blade.
and disposed radially With relation to the i In testimony whereof, I have aiiixed my signature;
THEODORE N. WHITE.
