Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WALKER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CFFICE TABLES AND BEDS COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,80l, dated March 16, 1875 application filed February 8, 1157 5.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DAVID WALKER, of Newark, in the State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in. a Gombined Oflice Table and Bed 5 and l do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the table closed for use as an office-table. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. l, showing the position of the mattress and bedding when the table is closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the table when arranged for use as a bed.
The same letter denotes the same part wherever it occurs in the several'ligures My invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described, in the construction of the combined office table and bed for which `Letters Patent No.135,021 were granted to -closet usually connected With an office-table,
and B forming a receptacle for the pillow and bedding, and for the extended end of the mattress when the table is closed for ordinary use. The compartment B has folding doors D D, located at the end of the table, and opening outward. A bed-bottom, G, which may be formed of slats or springs, or in any other suitable manner, is placed in the upper compartment of the table. To the end of this bed-bottom is hinged at h the slatted leaf J, which, when raised to a horizontal position, serves to increase the length of the bed-bottom. When the table is closed, this leaf hangs down in the position shown in Fig. 2, its lower end resting against the partition L. A mattress, M, rests on the bed-bottom G and leaf J.
When the table is closed, the foot of the mattress folds down in the front part of compartment B, as shown in Fig. 2. The back part of this compartment serves to hold a pillow, P, and the other required bedding. When the leaf J is raised to a horizontal position, the folding doors D D are necessarily open. Cleats K on the inner side of the doors enter recesses in the under side of the leaf J, and serve to support the leaf when extended.
Vhen it is desired to -nse the table as a bed, the top A is raised and supported upon the props E, the end doors D opened, the leaf J raised, when the mattress is ready for the receptionv of the pillow and bed-coverings.
I do not confine myself to hinging the tabletop at the end, as herein shown and described, as I contemplate hinging it in some cases at the side, and also making the top in two leaves, and hinging one to each side of the table-frame.
I claimy 1. An oflice-table made convertible into a bed by means of the hinged top A, bed-bot- 'tom G, hinged leaf J, and folding doors D D, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner described.
2. In a combined table and bed, the combination of the bed-bottom G, leaf J, and folding doors D D, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed and witnessed, at Washington, this 8th day of February, A. D. 1875.
DAVID WALKER.
