IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,778, dated March 16, 1875; application filed August 31, 1874.

T 0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOL KUH, of Jefferson, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Clamps; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to'the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my cutting and measuring apparatus. Fig. 2 is a front view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the same.

My invention consists in a laterallyextensihle holder formed of hinged segments, as will be hereinafter explained.

The following is a description of my invention:

In the annexed drawings, A A A designate three segments composing each half of the improved holder, which segments may be composed of wood or of metal. The two outside segments of each half of the holder have rigidly secured to them rods a, which rods pass freely through the intermediate segment A in opposite directions, and thus connect the segments together, and at the same time allow them to be adjusted and set at any desired distance apart, according to the length it is desired to cut the material. The three segments of the upper half of the holder are with four legs, B, which may be rigidly secured to the floor or other established object.

The manner of using the holder is to raise thetop half, and fill the lower half with the stalks or other material, laying the same as evenly as can be conveniently done. The top half is then closed and secured by the hooks b, and, with a hand-saw or knife, the ends of the stalks are cut off evenly, leaving them of an equal length.

If desirable, rods sliding in tubes maybe used for connecting the segments together, instead of the rods alone. Figs. 1 and 2 show the rods and tubes, and Fig. 3 shows the rods alone.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The laterally-extensible holder composed of two jointed sections, A A, substantially as specified.
