PERFORATING DEVICE.
application filed June 27,
This invention relatesto perforatingdevices and has for an object the provision of means for indicating on the material to be perforated the center line of the. perforating tool, whereby the operator may accurately determine the exact location on the maerial with which thetool will engage when in operation.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a perforating device. with means whereby a beam of light- 'is projected from the perforating tool on to the material to be perforated, indicatingthereon the position of the center of the perforating tool, thus enabling the operator to adjust the material so that the beam of light will strike the material at the spot to be perforated.-
A further object of the invention is to provide a perforating device with means whereby the center of the perforating tool is indicated by a beam of light striking the material to be perforated, and also means whereby the material to be perforated may have a comparatively large portion of its area illuminated around the spot where the indicating beam of light strikes, so that the operator may see in advance the position of the perforations to be made.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description:
Referring to the drawings in which like reference. characters refer to like parts, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a perforating device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the same; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the same, portions being removed to more clearly illustrate details of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference character, 1 indicates a perforating device which may be of any preferred type and which as illustrated in the drawings is of the punch press type. This device comprises a tool holder 2 to which a perforating tool 3 is secured through the me-' dium of a member 4 or in any other .pre-' ferred manner. Beneath the tool a work support or die 5 is arranged which is of the usual form. The tool holder 2 is secured to the head 6 of the press in any preferred 1923.. ser al n0. 6517.996.
extends into the recess? and into a recess formedfin the head6 of the press and registering with the recess7. TQ li z l 0f e. insertion of the bulb, the recess. 7, and the ess r ed n; t e ad, e m de. f;
greater diameter than the diameter of the bulb an-dsocketand to filltheopeningin the head 6 aswell as insulate the socket from h h d; an in ul t ng; W sher-.110 s-prQ-- vided, the outer end:of w hicl' fofr a portion of its diameter is provided with a flange 11 which is adapted to engage the head 6 to prevent the socket and attached bulb from being inserted too far into the recess 7. To prevent the socket and bulb from becoming accidentally separated from the head 6 a spring member 12 is provided, one end of whlch is secured to the head and the other end engages the flange 11. When it is desired to remove'the bulb from the head 6 and tool holder 2, the bulb socket and washer 10 are rotated until the flange 11 has been moved to a position out of engagement with the member 12 at which time these parts can be removed. The tool holder '2 is also provided with an opening 13, the lower end of which registers with an opening 14 formed in the tool 3, and the upper end communicates with the recess 7. here the opening 14 communicates with the recess 7 a diahragm member 15 is provided which seats in the tool holder 6 and is provided with an opening 16 which is preferably oblong in shape and-is of such a size as to restrict certain light rays from entering the openings 13 and 1.4, thereby insuring the projection of a well defined spot of light from the lower end of the opening 14:. It will here be understood that the opening 16 instead of being oblong'may be of any other suitable shape. In practice it has been found that by the use of an ordinary mill type filament bulb the opening 13 should be restricted in To illuminate the material around the spot to be perforated so that the operator can see in advance the position of the perforation to be made, the tool holder 2 is provided with openings 17 which communicate with the recess 7 and from which the light from the bulb will be projected onto the material. As the outer ends of these openings are located a greater distance away from the material than is the outer 7 17 are also adapted to serve as air ducts through which cool air is conducted into the recess 7 thereby keeping the bulb comparatively cool.
It Wlll be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that changes may be made in the details of the invention without departing from tiie spirit and scope of the appended claims.-
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a perforating device, a punching tool having a channel therethrough coincident with its axis and a source of light arranged so that the light therefrom will be projected through said channel onto the material to be punched. V
2. In a perforating device, a hollow punching tool, a punching tool holder having a perforation therethrough, a source of light positioned to project a beam of light through said perforation onto the material to be punched, a punching tool having an opening therethrough coincident with its axis, said source of light being adapted to project a beam of light through the opening in the punching tool. 7
3. In a perforating device, a punching tool having a light conducting opening there-through, a source of light positioned adjacent one end of said opening, and a removable diaphragm between said source of light and said opening. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
