To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBm P. SWAIDMARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hackensack, county of Bergen, and Stateof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Press Mechanism, of which t e following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for forming at a single operation metal clamps adapted to be clamped around hose, pipe sections, the, of varying diameter, the clamp comprising a metal ribbon havin a series of holes therethrough extending engthwise of the ribbon for some distance from one end. Adjacent the otherend of the ribbon aperpendicular loop is formed through which a hole is punched to receive a clamping bolt. The portion of the ribbon extending from the loop to the adjacent end is curved inwardly, that is, away from the loop, and is preferably provided with an outwardly extending centrally located longitudinal bead against which the end of the clamping bolt is adapted to press. Such clamps are of the character described in my Patent Serial Number 1,219,882, hose clamp, dated March 20, 1917, and my application Serial Number 236,675, clamp for hose, 8m, filed May 27, l 18.
My present invention is designed to form a complete clam at each operation except for the step of acing the bolt in the holes punched through the loop referred to. It might be more exact to state that the machine is designed to perform at a single operation the step of formin the spaced series of holes in one clamp, and at the same time forming the perpendicular loop and the adjacent curved portion containing the bead referred to, on the adjacent clamp, and cutting off the ribbon between the curved,'beaded portion and the portion containing the spaced holes of the adjacent clamp, these operations on adjacent parts of the strip being equivalent to the formation of a single complete clamp, as stated above. The metal between the holes of the longitudinally extending series is preferably scored transversely at-the same time that the holes are punched. by means of a coacting press head and table the necessary parts for punching the holesand forming the scorings, bending the metal upwardly to form the loop and pressing the same together and curvin the metal downwardly adjacent to the oop,
These operations are performed forming a bead therein and cutting it'ofi at the end of the curved beaded portion. My object is to provide devices of the character referred to and to provide improved combinations of elements in such mechanisms which are desirable in carrying out the desired results' In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating certain embodiments of my invention.
Inthe drawings Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation of a press head and table provided with one form of my invention, the parts being shown in position prior to operation; Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the press table, the arts being in the same position as shown in ig. 1; Figs. 3 and i are views similar to that shown in Fig. 1 showing difl'erent stages of the operation carried out by the machine Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a top plan view and the side elevation of the article formed by the machine and Figs. 7 and 8 are views similar to those shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of a mechanism involving a modified form of my invention.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the press head 1 is illustrated partially and carries a block 2 which carries a pair of downwardly extending punches 3, adjacent one end thereof. Spaced away from the punches 3, 3 are a series of punches 4, t and a series of scoring knives 5, 5 of less length than the punches 4, 4: and arranged intermediate the punches 4, 4 in the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings. The press table partially illustrated at '6 carries a block or bolster 7 secured to the table 6 .by means of suitable securing devices extending through the side flanges 8, 8 of the block 7. Block 7 is provided with a guide 9 adjacent one end through which the metal ribbon may be fed forwardly. The block 7 is alsoprovided with openings 10 adapted to aline with the punches 3, and with openings 11, 11 adapted to aline with the punches 4, 4:. The punches 3 are adapted to form the openings through the portions of the metal ribbon which are subseferred to.

These parts are adapted to form the curved end portion of the metal ribbon adjacent to the loop referred to, and a bead 16 on the curved surface 15, together with a corresponding depression 17 on the forming surface 14, are adapted to form the longitudinally extendinig bead on the end portion of the strip re erred to. The lengths of ribbon are cut apart by the knife 18 formed at the lower end of the member 13.
The clamping strip produced by the machine is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 as comprising the metal ribbon 19 provided with the series of longitudinally extending holes 20 and the scorings 21 intermediate the holes 20, the ribbon also being provided with the outwardly extending loop formed of the portions 22, 23 of the ribbon pressed upwardly and squeezed almost into contact, as shown. The ribbon is also provided with the curved end-portion 24 terminating at the end 25 and provided with the longitudinal bead 26.
The mechanism by which the loop 22, 23 is formed will now be described. A lever 27 is pivoted at 28 to the block 29 carried by press table 6. This lever is provided at one end with an upwardly extending projection 30 adapted to contact against the alined portion of the block 20f the press head as the latter descends, and preferably some time before the punches 4, 4 strike against the metal ribbon overlying the openings 11,

The opposite end of lever 27 carries a transversely extending member 31 provided with an upwardly extending forming blade '32 which is adapted to rise and fall in a vertical opening 33 in the block 7. As the press head descends the forming blade 32 will press the metal of the ribbon upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, while at the same time the forming surface 14 of member 13 is pressing the metal of the ribbon downwardly at one side of the loop. 7
The sides 22 and 23 of the loop are squeezed together, as shown in Figs. 3' and 4, between the edge 34 of the member 13 and the edge 35 of an arm 36 pivoted at 37 to the block 2 of the press head. Arm 36 I has a link 38 pivotally secured to its lower end, link 38 having operative engagement -at its opposite end with an arm 39 pivoted at 40 to block 2. Preferably link 38 is provided with screw-threads 41 on its end on which nuts 42 may be screwed to any desired adjustment to forma bearing for the oscillatin arm 39, through an opening in which l1nk 38 extends. A spring 43 is secured to arm 39 and to a fixed point on block 2 to normally hold arm 39 in the vertical position. i
r A block 44 is secured to one of the flanges 8 of the block 7 of re table and is provided with a beveled or cam face 45 which is engaged by the lower end of arm 39 as the press head descends, thus drawing the arm 36 toward the member 13, as shown in Fi s. 3 and 4 of the drawings, to squeeze t e sides of the loop 22, 23 of the ribbon together.
An adjustment pin. 46 is provided for locating the metal ribbon. 19 in the proper position for each operation. Pin 46 is carried by a sliding block 47 which is normally engaged within a suitable recess in a block 48. Block 48 is slidably mounted in a longitudinally extending recess 54 in the block 7 of the press table so that its position longitudinally of the metal ribbon, maybe adjusted. An adjusting bolt 50 extends into the block 48 in which it is free to rotate, but not to move longitudinally relatively thereto and extends with screw-threaded engagement through the vertical end portion 51 of the block 7, a nut 52 being mounted on the bolt and adapted to engage the outer end surface of the fixed vertical member 51, when the bolt and block 48 have been moved into adjusted positions. The block 47 carrying pin 46 is normally spring-pressed into -its position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which it is seated fully within a recess in the adjustment block 48 by means of a spring 53 seated in the recess 54 in block 7. This arrangement is provided in order that the pin 46 and the metal ribbon 19 may move rearwardly, that is to the right, referring to the drawings, when loop 22,23 and the curved surface 24 of the clamp are formed.
The operation of the machine will now be readily apparentl For the first operation of the machine the metal ribbon 19 is threaded through the guide 9 and permitted to overlie the portion of block 7 containing openings 11, after which the press head is caused to descend. The punches 3 thereupon form the openings which are to be the alined openings in the loop 22, 23, of the ribbon, the punches 4, 4 forming the holes 20, 20 of the ribbon. The press head is then raised and the ribbon moved forwardly until the rearmost opening 20 of the ribbon is in alinement with pin 46. This hole 20 is then slipped over the pin 46, the block 48 having been so adjusted by manipulation of bolt 50 that the different portions of the ribbon will all lie in correct position. The press head is then again caused to descend, whereupon the loop 22, 23 of the clamp in which the bolt holes have been formed, by the first op eration, will be formed by the conjoint action of the forming blade 32 and squeezing surfaces 34 and 35 of members 13 and 36. At the same time the end portion 24 of the ribbon will be formed between the coacting surfaces 14and 15 of the press head and the V downwardly by V the ribbon Wlll be allowed to yield rear-' except stationary bed-plate member, the bead 26 will be formed by thedie-member 16, and the ribbon will be severed at its end-25 by the knife, 18 at theend of the surface 14:. .During this operation, as the metal is pressed the surface 14:, of member 13,

By the time that the loop 22, 23 has been nearly formed and as the ribbonis about to be severed, the punches 4r, 4. form the series of holes 20 in the next succeeding length of ribbon and the blades 5' form the scored lines between holes 20. The first clamp is now completely prepared through the loop 22, 23 andupon raising the press head the length of ribbon, in whlch the holes 20 have just been formed, is again fed forwardly and the slipped over the pin 46 which has again been moved in its proper position of adjustment by spring 53, after which the operation is repeated, the number of complete clamps formed being equal to the number-of times the press head descends, after the prelimi-' nary operation described.
A slight modification of the mechanism described is illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 in V which the lever 27 is used in place of the lever 27 in the form of my invention first described. Lever 27 is provided with an end portion 55, the lever being bent, as shown, so that its end portion will extend into the path of the lower end of arm 39 as the latter descends. With this mechanism the end of arm 39 rides against the cam surface 45 to start the pivoted arm 36 into movement toward arm 13 and lever 27 is immediately thereafter oscillated by the contact of the lower end of arm 39 with the end portion 55 of lever 27 the operation being the same in this case as in the other except that the portion of the ribbon forming the loop is not forced upwardly quite as quickly relatively to the carrying out of the other operations as in the form of my invention first described.
It will be obvious that my invention is not limited strictly to the exact details of construction described, but that a reasonable range of equivalents is included therein as indicated by the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:

In press mechanism, the combination of a table carrying a locating pin, means for adjusting the normal position of the pin, spring means pressing the pin into adjusted position and yieldable to permit movement ofthe pin in the opposite direction, a press head coacting with said table, and means carried by the head and table for forming a loop in a metal ribbon having a hole therein positioned over said pin.
5. In press-mechanism, the combination of a press head ca rying a pair of loopsqueezing members, one of the same being movable toward the other, a table carrying a locating pin, means for adjusting the normal position ofthe pin, spring means normally pressing the pin into adjusted position away from the plane of said loop lidv squeezing members, means for pressing upwardly, between said squeezing members, a portion of a metal ribbon having a hole positioned over'said pin, as said head descends and means for movingsaid movable squeezing member toward the other squeezing member as said portion of the ribbon ispressed upwardly.
6. In press mechanism, the combination of a coacting table and press head providedwith devices for punching a series of openings through one section of a metallic ribbon, forming a loop in another section of the ribbon, and cutting off the ribbon at a point between the loop and the openings, 15 said table having a locating pin beyond the loop-forming mechanism, adapted to extend through an opening of the ribbon formed at a previous operation, and means permitting the yielding of said pin toward the loop 20 forming mechanism as the loop is formed.
