INVE/VTUR FRANK J GARDNER ,4 TTORNEVS PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. GARDNER, 015 NORTH BRANCH, MICHIGAN.
'DIE rmvorr.
Application filed March 10, 1921.
To all whom "it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK J. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Branch, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and ImprovedDie'Punch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to punching dies and has for an object to provide an im proved simplified die which may beused with a vise or pressing machine of any kind and which will at one operation form a cup for air pumps and the like.
-Another object in view more specifically is to provide a die which is formed with coacting cutting edges and bevel pressing sections whereby when the leather or other material is formed in the desired shape, the same will be cut at a correct bevel during a pressing action.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a punching die arranged as a nested construction so as to punch a number of articles at one time simultaneously.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a die disclosing one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Figure 1 on line 3--3.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing how the cup is severed during the pressing operation.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through a finished cup.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates what may be termed a body formed with sockets 2 and 3 connected by a suitable aperture or passageway 4;. The sockets 2 and 3 are of different diameters so as to provide difierent size cups but they could be made of thesame diameter if desired. The cup formed in the die illustrated in Figure 1 is intended for air pumps or similar pumps where cups of this character are necessary. Each end of the body 1 is provided with a groove 5 which merges into an edge 6 by reason of the bevel section 7 and the bevel section 8. The annular edge 6 acts as a cutting edge for cutting the unused part of leather 9 near the end of the forming stroke of the punch 10. This punch is provided with a bevel section 11 which presses the leather against edge 6 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 4:, 1922.
Serial No. 451,144.
and causes a cutting action which results in placing the bevel 12 of the cup 13 on the inside thereof. The punch 10 is provided with a forming section 14 having an aperture 15 for accommodating the center punch rod 16 which is used to cut out a hole in the center of'each of the cups. The punch 10 is made with a socket 17 similar to socket 3 but smaller and the punch is formed with an annular cutting head 18 similar to the cutting edge 6 and co-acting with the auxiliary punch 19, which auxiliary punch is formed with a forming section 20 and a bevel portion 21 similar to the punch 10. An aperture is arranged centrally of the auxiliary punch 19 for accommodating the punch rod 16 which may be driven through an auxiliary punch 19, punch 10, body 1 and the third punch member 22 so as to punch a hole in the center of each of the cups formed by these punches. The punch member 22 is identical with the auxiliary punch 19 except that it is larger and fits directly into the socket 2.
In operation, a flat strip of leather is placed across each of the sockets and the respective punches inserted manually as far as possible and then the device placed between the jaws of a vise and the vise tightened until the punches are pressing part of the leather against the bottom of the respective sockets. Just before the cups are pressed against the bottom of the sockets, the bevel portions 11 and 21 respectively will co-act with the edges 6 and 18 respectively and cut the unused leather so as to produce the bevel 12 on the finished cup. The punches may be formed with squared portions 23 so as to permit an easy rotation thereof and to loosen the punches when withdrawing the same. However, before the punches are withdrawn, a punch rod 16 is driven through the whole series of punches and the body 1 so as to out out a hole in the center of each cup. The punch rod 16 may have any desired form of operating face but as shown in the drawing an annular cutting edge 24 is provided which will produce a form of shearing action at the edge of the respective apertures 4 and 15. After the punch rod 16 and the punches have all been removed the cups may then also be removed and are in condition for use. From this it will be observed that a finished cup with a bevel edge and center hole is provided by a single continuous operation. In the draw respective ing an arrangement has been provided wherein three cups are formed at one operation but it is evident that one or a large number may be formed without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
What I claim is 1. A punching die comprising a body having a socket in each end and a cutting flange adjacent the outer part of each socket and a die for each socket formed with a pressing and formin section fitting into said socket and an inc ined portion for operation with said flange for severing the cup formed in the socket. V
2. A die and socket structure for forming pump cups comprising a body having a socket in each end and a cutting bead at the edge of each socket, a die for each socket provided with a forming section and a bevel section co-acting with said cutting bead, both said dies and said socket being formed with a central aperture, and a punch rod formed 7 with a cutting end adapted to be forced through said apertures for cutting an aperof the cups formed in said sockets before they are removed therefrom.
