v K. DARR ET AL BRICKLAYERS HAMMER Filed Feb. 12. 1925 Patented Sept.- 21, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KIMMEL DARE AND HARVEY S. GLUNT, OF EL ZDOIRAIDO,- PENNSYLVANIA.
nmcxLAYnn's Harman.
Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in hammers and more particularly to the type used by bricklayers and masons.
One of the important objects of the pres ent invention is to provide a bricklayers hammer wherein the same is-provided with means for facilitating the extraction of nails, thus obviating the necessity ofhaving to carry an extra hammer or nail extractor for such purposes.
A still further object is to provide a bricklayers hammer of the above mentioned character, which is simple in-oonstruction, strong and durable .and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of 'this specification wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l is aside elevation of the improved hammer.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the hammer head, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Figure 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 1 designates generally the head of a bricklayers hammer, the same being provided at one end with the usual driving head 2 and at its opposite end with the usual blade 3. As the use of the hammer is well known in the art and as the same forms no important part of the present invention, a further detailed description, thereof is not thought necessary. The central thickened portion 4 of the hammer head is provided with the usual socket 5 for receiving the upper end of the handle 6.
A pair of substantially rectangular shaped sockets 7 and 8 respectively are formed in the inward face of the driving head 2 adjacent the respective sides thereof and in the .intermediate portion of the same as clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. Cooperating therewith are the inwardly enlarging notches 9 and 10 respectively, the same being formed in the sides of the driving head 2. This 12, 1925. Serial a... 8,715.
construction provides a means whereby thena1l whlch 1s to be extracted has its head j disposed in either of the sockets and the and 12. The outer sides of these flanges or ears terminate at a point adjacent the intermediate portion of the blade. flanges or cars is provided with a taperingnotch 13 in the bottom thereof as -clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
The provision of the depending flanges or ears enables the blade portion of the hammer head to be used in extractin nails, the head of the nail to be extracted being held in engagement with the inner side or face of the flange or car which is in use, the shank portion of the nail being disposed within the inwardly enlarging notch 13.
The provision of a bricklayers hammer of the above mentioned character, wherein the same is provided with a nail extracting means enables a bricklayer or mason to use a single implement for a two fold purpose,
Each ,of these "central portion 4 are the flanges or ears 11 namely, as a bricklaying tool and as a.
means forremoving nails from scaffolding or the like thus obviating the necessity of a bricklayer having to carry an ordinary claw hammer or the like for the purpose solely of removing nails when disassembling a scaffold.
While we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described we claim is In a hammer head for a bricklayers hammer wherein the same includes the usual the invention, what driving head portion, the latter being proextracted being disposed in said notch, the vided with a socket in the inward face of head portion of said nail being disposed in the intermediate portion thereof adjacent said socket. 10 the side of the same, said driving head being In testimony whereof We aflix our signa- 5 further provided with an inwardly enlargtures.
ing notch in said side communicating vgith KIMMEL DARR, said socket, the shank portion of a nail to be HARVEY S. GLUNT.
