UNETED STATES JACOB L. ARMBRUSTER, OF SYRACUSE, IIEVT YORK.
CHISELING TOOL.
Application filed May 1,
the introduction of molten lead which is also thoroughly tamped to form a gas and liquid-tight joint.
It frequently happens that changes would be made in the soil pipe and fixtures connected thereto necessitating separation of the pipe sections at the joints and therefore, removal of the lead and other packing, and the main object of my present invention is to provide a tool which is better adapted for this particular work than the ordinary cold chisel commonly used.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view ofmy improved chisel.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the adjacent ends of the pipe sections showing the lead packing in the joint and my improved tool in operative position for removing the packing.
One of the pipe sections as A- is provided at one end with an annular enlargement a for receiving the adjacent end of the other section A- leaving an annular groove a surroundin the adjacent end of the section A in which is tightly packed a lead filler previously melted and poured into the groove and thoroughly tamped to form a gas and liquid-tight joint.
The tool for removing this lead packing comprises an elongated shank or handle --1 and a chiseled end -2- reduced in thickness and provided with opposite flat faces --3 and 4 thereby forming an oifset shoulder -5-- on the end of the shank adjacent the blade 2- to limit the entrance of the tool into the work. The side 4.- of the blade 2 opposite the shoulder -5 is disposed in substantially the same vertical plane as the corresponding side of the shank 1 while the opposite side 1924. Serial No. 710,331.
-3 is preferably parallel with the side 4 The upper edge as 6, of the blade is straight and is substantially parallel with the axis of the shank 1 while the lower edge as 7- is curved from the shank toward the outer end of the blade to form a cutting edge -8- thereby forming what may be termed a flat tapered blade.
The object in curving the lower edge of the blade -2 is to cause it to deflect the cutting edge 8 upwardly when driven more or less deeply into the lead packing Z) by impact of a hammer or other suit able tool against the outer end of the shank --1- thereby preventing excessive entry of the point of the tool into the work and providing fulcra at different points in its length forprying out the loosened packing.
The lower edge of the oifset. shoulder 5 constitutes a bearing 9 adapted to fulcrum on the upper face of the flange -a during the chiseling operation and prying the loosened lead out of the groove -a, it being understood that the length of the blade is relatively short as compared with the length of the shank 1, the outer end of which together with the blade constitutes a hand lever with the shank as the long end or handle thereby afiordinga relatively long leverage with the shoulder 9 as the fulcrum for prying the chiseled lead loose and if necessary, the outer end of the shank may be forced downwardly during the prying operation by blows of a hammer upon the upper face thereof.
I claim:
'A tool for removing lead packing from soilpipe and analogous joints, comprising a 7 steel shank having a transverse shoulder at one end adapted to fulcrum on the flange of the pipe, said shank having an integral blade extending forwardly from and wholly at one side of the shoulder, one edge of the blade being curved longitudinally from the shoulder toward the opposite edge to form therewith a cutting end-and also to assist in deflecting the cutting end outwardly as it is driven into the lead packing.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of April, 1924.
JACOB L. ARMBRUSTER.
