WW vMgp United States Patent This invention relates in general to carpenters tools, and more specifically to a gauge for setting hinges of a door. h
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved gauge set which may be utilized in the hanging of'doors, said gauge set being adapted to be placed on a 'door jamb and an edge of a door for outlining that portion of the door jamb and door which must be cut-away for the proper positioning of leaves of hinges.
Another object 'of this invention is to provide an improved gauge set for aligning hinge leaves of hinges and hanging of doors, said gauges being of a relatively simple construction and capable of being accurately set for out-' lining those areas that must be cut away for the reception of leaves of door hinges.
A further object of this invention-is to provide. an improved door hinge gauge set whichincludes a pair of cooperating hinge gauges, said hinge gauges being adapted to be readily set in place on a door jamb and an edge of a door outlining an area which must be cut-away from the reception of a hinge leaf.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an improved scriber which has a blade adapted especially for the outlining of an area to be cut-away for the reception of a hinge, said scriber having a blade adapted to cooperate with a door hinge gauge so as to penetrate a portion of a door jamb or door a desired depth, said depth being equal to the thickness of a hinge leaf adapted to be inserted into the door jamb or door;
I These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details ofconstruction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the acf'companying drawings forming a part. hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 'is a fragmentary perspective view of an edge on a door adapted to be hung, said door having mounted thereon a door gauge especially designed for marking the area of the door to be cut-away for the reception of a hinge leaf;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the door of Figure 1 and shows the outline of an opposite side of the door gauge; a
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 3-3 of Figure 1 and shows the arrangement of an adjustable plate carried by the doorgauge for facilitating the clamping of the door. onto an edge of the door;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 4-4 of Figure 3 and shows the general configuration of the plate for clamping the door;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a complementary door jamb, said door jamb having secured thereto a jamb gauge for outlining a portion of the same adapted to be cut-away to receive a hinge leaf;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 6-6 of Figure 5 and shows the general cross section of the central portion of the jamb gauge and the manner in which the same is secured to a door jamb;

Figure:8 is an' elevational view of the bottom portion of the scriber illustrated in Figure 7 and shows the configuration of the blade portion thereof.

Referring now to Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, in particular, it is seen that there is illustrated a door gauge, which is referred to. in general by the reference numeral 10, for mounting on a door to facilitate the outlining of an area of the door which must be cut-away for the reception of a hinge leaf. The door gauge 10 is illustrated as being mounted on an edge portion of a door 12 and is in position for the scribing of lines on one edge and a portion of one face of the door 12 to facilitate the removal of a portion of the door for reception of a hinge leaf.
The door gauge 10 is generally channel-shaped in crosssection and includes a web 14, which has integral therewith and extending rearwardly from one edge thereof a first flange 16. Extending-rearwardly from the opposite edge of the web 14 in spaced parallel relation to the first flange 16 is a second flange 18. The flange 18 is removably secured to the web 14 by a pair of suitable fasteners 20. i
In order that the door gauge 19 may be removably secured to the door .12, the web 14 is provided with an I {elongated vertical opening adjacent the flange; 13. The
opening 22 has disposed therein a frontnportion of an adjustable plate 26 which has a rear portion of a greater width than the front portion to form shoulders 24 which abut against the rear portion of the web 14 to retain the plate, 26 in position. It will also .be noted that the front portion of the opening 22 is of a greater width than the rear portion thereof and that thep'late 26 is provided with outwardly projecting tabs 28 which prevent. the rearward movement of the same.
Referring nowto Figure ,3 in particular, it will-beseen that the opening 22 is of a greater width than the thickness ofthe plate 26 whereby adjustment of the plate may be accomplished. In order that the plate 26 may be ad justed transversely of theweb 14, the flange 18 is provided with an outwardly projecting boss 29 whichhas an internally threaded bore 30 therethrough; Threadedly engaged'in the bore30 is an elongated fastener 32 whose inner end abuts against the plate 26 and urges the same into clamping engagement with a face of the door 12 adjacent the flange 18. The fastener 32 is provided with a transversely extending pin 34 to facilitate the rotation of the same.
It will be noted that the web'14 is provided with an elongated generally rectangular opening 36 which extends to an edge thereof and communicates with an elongated opening 38 in the flange 16. It will be understood that heights of the openings 36 and 38 are equal to the height of the hinge leaf adapted to be mounted in thedoor 12 and that the widths of the openings 36 and 38 are equal to the width and thickness of the hinge leaf, respectively.
In .order to facilitate the engagement of a scriber with a door 12, the upper and lower edges of the opening 36 have outwardly bevelled outer portions 40. It will also be noted that the intersections between the horizontal and vertical portions of the opening 38 terminate in inwardly projecting recesses 42.
Referring now to Figures"5, 6 and 7 in particular, it will be seenthat there .is illustrated a conventional door jamb construction which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 44. It will beunderstood that both the jamb and the door will be conveniently marked at the appropriate places in order that the gauges 10 and 54 may be properly positioned. From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will n5 readilyunderstood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the'exact construction shown and described,
