This invention relates to boiler improvers and fuel 'eco'nomizers for heating air and admitting it to the interior of a boiler or furnacefor facilitating combustion within the furnace combustion chamber. Heretoforefthese devices have been mounted interis objectionableas most of these devices require to be. set in operation by a skillful operator. Another objectionable feature l resulting from the above arrangement 1s that the heated air must'ypassthrough. the
products of combustionlin the pipe to get to the "combustion "chamber. My object fisv to provide a simple device? of the above character' which will overcome the] above objectionable features and-which may be cheaply manufactured and readily mounted in position on the furnace.
I attain myobjects by forming my boiler improver andff'ue'l economizer as an eXtension of'the pipe collar" of the furnace where by the furnace" pipe may be taken down extending the; inner end of the economiz er into the furnace andproviding with a laterally 'directedopening for directing the 30 air around'the interior of the furnacecoiu. 'bustion chamber andout of the path of the. products of combustion passing through the collar. ,Thel constructions are hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which: Fig. 1"is' a section'ofpart or. the upper endof a furnace showing my device'in posi-' tiori thereon; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation. of my device showing the damper partly opened.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
r 1 .is the upper end of the combustion chamber of the furnace which is provided with the usual pipe collar 2. The fuel economizer comprises an annular one piece chamber 3, a damper Land an air inlet pipe v5. The inner end 3 of the outer wall of the chamber is adapted to be received in the collar 2 and the outer end 3' of this wall -is substantially the same diameter as the outside diameter of the collar. This per-- mits the same flue pipe 6-w hich originally fitted on the collar to be fitted on the'chamber. The device is secured to the collar by means of set screws 7 threaded in a ring 3 which is formed integral with and spaced from the end 3 v to form an annular groove for receiving the collar 2. Air is admitted to the outer end of the chamberby a pipe 8.
The inner end of .the chamber extends below the inner end of the collar, and a laterally directed opening 3?; or openings, is formed in its outer wall communicating with the interior of the combustion chamber close to its wall; Above its: lower end a partition "3 is formed "in which are formed The number andsize the air openings 3 g of these openmgsdeterminesthe flow of air ,to the openings 3. g 7 By arranging the latter to direct thecair laterally into the combustion chamber, the
air is directly broughtinto the combustion chamber -without bein g interfered with by thefiowof products of combustion passing through the central opening of the chamber 3 and the flue pipe i6. Its passage by gravity "of the combustion chamberjof thefurnace is by this arrangement much facilitated.
, This also tends to prevent the air outlet opening 8? from being clogged by soot. The
end of tli e pipe ,8 communicating with the,
atmosphere is positioned below the outlet opening 3 to. tend to prevent flue gases ,being forced out through the device when 1 a damper 9 is closed.
The damper is slightly [less] in diameter than the diameter of the central passage of 'the" chamber so that the latter is not entirely closed off whenthe damper is in its the chamber and passes over the serrations on the lever when the latter is rocked to open thedamper. Immediately the lever is released the arm en ages a tooth to hold the damper as adjusted. v The. free endof the lever is passed out through a slot 13 in the flue pipe 6 and is provided with a suitable hand grip.
The above arrangement of pivoting the damper permits it, if closed, to be blown open if a gas explosion occurs in the furnace and if the damper is partly open, when an explosion occurs, the above described releasable locking means will permit the damper to be blown fully open. Danger of gas escaping into the building is thus prevented.
In practice the size and number of the openings 3 in the partition 3} are determined by the grate area of the boiler on which the device is to be installed. Having settled the total area desirable, the workman drills upthrough the bottom of the annular chamber and through the partition, afterwards plugging the holes in the bottom.
I find with my device that the eliiciency of the heating system is much increased relative to the amount of fuel burned, so much so that in some cases where the efficiency of the system has not been up to the required rating, by the use of my device it is possible to so increase the efiiciency as to render the installation of a larger boiler unnecessary. The heat is held more steady and uniform, better combustion of the fuel is obtained leaving only a fine ash, and greater time may be taken between firing periods.
The device, it will be noted, is very compact and simple to manufacture and install.
lVhat I claim is i 1. A boiler improver and fuel economizer including an annular chamber having integral inner and Outer walls; a ring formed integral with and spaced from the outer wall to form an annular groove adapted to receive a pipe collar of a furnace;rthe outer end of the outer wallbeing substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the said collar, the inner end of the chamber being adapted to extend below the inner end of the collar and having a laterally directed opening formed therein; an inlet pipe communicating with the end of thecha mber remote from the opening; and a partition formed integral with the inner and outer Walls of the chamber above the opening, the
partition being provided with openings adapted to regulate the flow of air to the laterally directed opening.
2. A boiler improver and fuel economizer including an annular chamber having one end of its outer wall adapted to be received in a pipe collar of a furnace and to extend below the collar into the interior ofthe furnace, the other end being adapted to receive {a line pipe, an air opening being formed at the upper end of the chamber and a laterally directed opening at the lower end of the chamber, through which the air from the chamber may pass close to the in side of the casing of the furnace; and a perforated partition dividing the annular chamber above its lower end and serving to regulate the flow of air to the outlet.
3. The combination with a furnace having a pipe collar, of an annular chamber carried within the said collar and provided with air inlet and outletopenings and a central passage for flue gases; a fine pipe connected with the chamber; a damper for controlling the passage of the products of combustion through the central passage, the damper being pivotally mounted so that a gas er."- plosion will blow it to the open position; and means for releasably locking the damper in an open position, the said 'means being adapted to permit a gas explosion to blow the damper wide open and to retain it in the position to which it is blown until manually reset.
4. The combination with a furnace, of means associated with the smoke collar of the furnace for supplying fresh air to the interior of the furnace and having a passage for line gases and a damper for controlling the passage of the flue gases through the passage, the damper being pivotally mounted so that a gas explosion will blow it to the open position; and means for releasably locking the damper in an open position, the said means being adapted to permit a gas e:;- plosion to blow the damper wide open and to retain it in the position to which it is blown until manually reset.
Signed at Toronto, Can., this 25th day of July, 1925.
