To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALEXANDER GRAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, in the county of W'estchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Furnace Structure, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The present invention. relates to new'and useful improvements in furnaces, and it pertains more particularly to heating furnaces employed for heating residences and the like although the principles thereof are applicable to furnaces on a larger scale than those mentioned.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to construct a furnace in such a manner that the products of combustion before they pass out the chimney will be passed in contact with the outer surface of the furnace to heat Such furnace and maintain a higher temperature therein thani is possible where the furnace is openly eX- posed to the air. j
lt is a further object of the invention to provide means whereby the products of combustion of the furnace will be released' directly to the chimney, if desired.
Tt is a further object of the invention to provide an automatic damper which will operate upon the opening of the charging door of the furnace to release the gases present in the fire box of the-furnace owing to their inability to ignite on account of the low temperature in the lire box.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in whichlligure l is a vertical sectional view showing the furnace in elevation and the appa ratus of the` present invention in vertical section;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly .to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates the furnace, and 6 designates the ash pit thereof. The furnace has the usual charg ing door 7 draft door 8, smoke pipe 9, and
vpressure controlling device 10.
In carrying out thev present invention, the insulating covering, such as asbestos, lagging, or the like, is removed lfrom the furnace shell, and such shell is surrounded b a jacket 11 slightly spaced therefrom, as esignated by the reference numeral 12. As
more clearly shown in Fig. 2, this jacket extends almost entirely around the furnace, that is, from a point closel adjacent the hinges of the draft door andy designated by the numeral 13, to a point designated by the numeral 14C closely adjacent the catch side of the draft door. jacket has an extension 16, which isadapted to telescopically engage an extension 17 depending from the smoke pipe 9.
Near the bottom cfthe jacket l1, there is a tubular extension 18, and such tubular extension receives the elbow portion 19, of the chimney extension 20. This chimney extension 20 is provided with a clean-out 21 in the usual manner.
Located intermediate J[he ends of the jacket and partially surrounding the furn ace, there is a artition 22, and this partition occupies a -orizontal plane, as shown, and divides the space 12 between the furnace and the jacket into an upper compartment A. and a lower compartment B, the communica tion between the two compartments being associated through. the space 23.
Located in the smoke pipe 9 between the chimney 20' and the tubular extension 17, there is a damper 24. This damper has a crank arm and extending forwardly of the furnaceV and connected tosaid crank arm 25, there is a rod 26. This rod 26 is con nected to a crank arm 27 mounted upon the upper end of a vertical shaft 28. This shaft 28 is mounted in brackets 29 and 30, and the lower end of the shaft is provided with a cam lever 31 adapted for engagement with the charging door 7.
The normal position of the damper 2l with the charging door in closed position. is closed, as shown in Fig. 2. When, however, the charging door is opened, through the medium of the. mechanism just described the damper will be moved to open position to permit of the free escape. of products of combustion through the chimney 20 during the charging ofthe furnace.
Mounted in the elbow 19 of the chimney 20, there is a damper 32, and such damper 32 has a crank arm 33 connected to a chain 3ft, the lower end of which is provided with a weight 35. This chain passes upwardly over pulleys 36 and 37 and is connected as at 38, to the draft door 8. This chain is connected intermediate of its ends to a rocking lever 39 of the -pressurey device 10 in such a manner that as the draft door 8 ie The top wall of this opened, the dampler 32 will be closed. When, however, t e pressure deviceoperates to close the draft door 8, the damper 32 Will partially close and retain the products of combustion within the space between the jacket and the frurnace to cause a heating of the furnace.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved furnace in which the products of combustion are used to maintain a temperature about the shell of the furnace and prevent undue cooling thereof with a consequent savin of fuel consumed thereby.
What is o aimed is:
l. A heating plant comprising a furnace, a jacket surrounding a portion of said furnace and spaced therefrom, a flue leading from the furnace and passing through said jacket, a branch flue leading from the first-- mentioned flue and establishing communication between the first-mentioned Hue and the space between the jacket, a fine leading from the space between the jacket and the boiler at the bottom of said jacket and having communication with the first-mentloned flue, "a damper controlling said last-mentioned flue, and means for automatically opkdra t door to closed eratin said damper, said means comprising a dra t door for the furnace and a connection between the draft door and the damper whereby upon movement of the draft door to open position, the damper will be moved to o en position and upon movement of the osition the damper will be moved to closedJ position.
2. In a heatin lant, a furnace, a jacket surrounding sai rnace and spaced with yrespect thereto, a flue leading from the furnace and assing through said jacket, means for establlshing communicationV between the flue and the space between the furnace and the jacket, a flue leading from the bottom of said -acket upwardly 1n the roximity of of the rst-mentioned Hue and iaving 'communication therewith, a damper controlling the first-mentioned flue, a damper controlling the second-mentioned iiue, means for operating said first-mentioned damper, said last-mentioned means being controlled by the charging door of the furnace, and means for ,operating the second-mentioned dam )er and the draft door of the furnace simultaneously, said means comprising a pressure actuated device carried by the furnace.
