RAIL TIE.
Application filerl September This invention relates to improvements in rail ties and is more particularly adapted to a device for supporting a pair of mam rails and complementary switch points associated therewith, means being further provided for securing the rails on the ties. One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide means whereby a limited runway is formed for the switch point on the ties.
Another important object of the invention is'to provide a device of the above mentioned Character which is particularly used in mines where a portable track and switch point are to be laid, my improved ties enablingthe rails and switch mechanism to be readily andeasily laid, base fiange enga-ging clips being arranged on the ties for securing the rails and switch mechanism in proper position on the ties.
A fu'rther object is to provide a device of the above mentioned Character which. is simple in construction, inexpensive, and furthermore adapted to the purposes for which the same is designed.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description:

VIn the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of niy invention, the numeral 1 designates an elongated metallic tie the same including the rail supporting surface 2 and the depending side fianges 8, the lower edges of which rest on the ground, and provide a means for supporting' the ties. A. pair of rails 4 and 5, respectively, of the ordinary construction, extend. transversely across the upper surface 2 of the tie 1 and 'the inner base flanges of the rails are cut away as at 6 so as to permit the complementary switch points 7 and 8 to be brought into cooperative relation with the rails 4 and 5 when the switch point Operating mechanism designated generally by the numeral 9 is actu- 21, 1925. For the purpose of securing the rails in their proper positions on the ties are provided suitable clamping means the construction of which will be presently apparent. A pair of spring clips 13, each of which is formed of a single piece of spring metal, are pvotally supported intermediate the ends thereof on theupper surface 2 of the tie l at points adj acent the outer base flanges of the rails 4 and 5 as shown more clearly in Figure 1. The inner end of each of the spring clips is bentslightly upwardly. The intermediate portion Vof each clip is provided with an opening' through which the pivot 16 extends whereby each of the clips is pivotally supported on the tie 1 and it is obvious that when each of the clips is swung on its pivot in one direction, the inner upwardly disposed end is swung over the outer base fianges of the respective rails 4 and 5.
For the purpose of securing the inner base flanges of these rails so that the rails will be rigidly supported on the tie 1, there is secured on the tie 1 a. substantially rectangular plate 19, the securing means therefor being shown at 20, suitable openings 21 beino` provided in each of the plates for receiving the fastening means. A lateral eX- tension 22 is formed on the outer side edge of each of the plates adjacent the forward ends thercof and these extensions are also disposed slightly upwardly and adapted to extend over and engage the inner base flanges of the rails 4 and 5 at a point adj acent the cut-out portions 6 of the rails so that a. space will be provided between the raills 4 and 5 and the major portion of the outer side edges of the clamping plates 19 to permit a sliding movement of the free ends of the switch points 7 and 8 on the upper surface 2 of the tie 1. vThe outer side edges of the clamping plates further limit the movement of the respective switch points.
The portions of the rails 4 and 10 and 5 and 11, respectively, which extend across the upper surface of the tie 12, are secured thereon through the medium of spring clips 13, the inner ends of which engage the outer base flanges of the rails 11 and 5 in a manner similar to that in which the spring clips 13 engage the outer base fianges of the portions of the rails 4 and 5 which eXtend across the top surface of the tie 1. rhe outer base tlanges of the rails 10 and 11 and the inner base 'lanves of the rails and 5 are secured on the tie 12 through the medium of the spring clips 23 each of which is constructed of a single piece of spring metal the intermediate portion being provided with an opening' for receiving the fastening element 25 and the respective ends of each of the strips comprising the spring clips 23 are bent upwardly. The outer ends of these spring clips engaging the inner base flanges of the rails 4 and 5 while the inner ends of the spring clips 13 engage the upper surfaces of the outer base flanges of the rails 10 and 11. This construction is more clearly illustrated in Figure 1. A pair of spring clips similar to the spring clips 13 are arranged on the tie 12 and are adapted to engage the upper surfaces of the inner base flanges of the rails 10 and 11 so that the rails will be securcd on the tie at 12 against lateral movement as well as Vertical movement.
The siinplicity with which the present invention is constructed enables the parts to be readily assembled or disassembled and a device of this character is more particularly adapted for use in mines where portable tracks are to be laid and with a tie structure of the Character embodied in the present invention as'well as the rail clamping means associated with the tie, considerable time and labor will be saved in laying the rails.
Furthermore, the rail securing means as associated with the ties are so arranged as not to interfere with the operation of the switch points 7 and 8 and the actuating mechanism 9 provided therefor.
lvliile I have shown the preferred embodimentof my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, Shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacritieing any of the advantages of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what desire to claim and secure by Letters `Patent is In combination with a pair of main rails, and a pair of cooperating switch points associated with an additional pair of rails, and a rail supporting tie over the surface of which the free ends of the switch points are disposed; of a pair of rectangular shaped plates secured on said tie atvpoints adjacent the free ends of the respective switch points, the outer side edges of the plates being vspaced from the inner sides of the respectiveswitch points, a lateral extension formed on the side edge of each plate adjacent the forward end thereof and adapted for engagement with the respective inner base fianges of the first mentioned pair of rails, the spaced plate providing' a limited run way for the switch point.
