TULIUS ENGELLAND, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSdURI.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed January 27, 1921. Serial No. 440,390. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS -ENGELLAND citlzen of the United States, residing at and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will-enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, forming part' of this "spec'i cation, in which- Figure 1 is a detail view of'my improved loose leaf binder.
.Fig. 2 is a detail view of the front or back cover stiffener.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plate used in connection with my improved binder.
Fig. 4 is a modified form of binder clip.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in loose leaf binders and ing or openings in the back or cover portion of the book and then permitted to spread apart whereupon by the formation of the .legs of the U-shaped clip, it will interlock with the cover against accidental displacement.
While I have shown forms of my improved clip as being U-shaped, it is obvious that other shapes may be specially adapted for special purposes and could be made without the least change in the nature and principle of my invention.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the back cover of a book, and 2 the front cover thereof, said covers being connected by back member 3 hinged thereto. As shown in Fig. 2, the stiffener for one of the covers, indicated at 4, is slotted as at 5, to provide aspace 4 for the toes or extreme ends of the clips.
The inner edge of cover 4 i embraced by a' U-shaped'.str1p of metal 6 provided with key-hole or T-shaped openings 7 oppositely Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain newdispos'ed to each other in pairs. This strip 6. when slipped over the edge of the cover stiffener 4 will cover the slots 5 and of course, the openings 7 are left exposed, though any finishing covering material may be employed on the vcoverafter the strip 6 is placed 1n position. 8 indicates a U-shaped clip made of flat spring metal and near the extremities of this clip are notches 9 on one or both sides thereof. 10 indicates a pile of leaves in dotted lines in Fig. 1, each leaf of whlch plle, as usual, is perforated as at 11. If it i desired to bind these leaves between the covers, the leg of the cli is passed through the alined perforations o the leaves and then the legs of the clip are pressed together and inserted in the enlarged portion of the key-hole openings and permitted to spring apart whereby they become looked to the cover and hold the leaves in place. I prefer to mount the legs on the back cover,
but, of course, these legs could be arranged on the hinged back cover, if desired.
In Fig. 4 the clip 22 is shown as being made of a heavy wire having slots 23 in its sides which are designed to cooperate with a keeper plate having key hole openings 24.
piece 3, or on the front binder is obvious from the foregoing. To
remove the clips from the binder, it 1s only necessary to pring their legs together and lift them out of their openings in the keeper plates. In this way, the entire pile of leaves may be taken out and if it is desired to place new leaves in position, the clips may be removed so as to properly arrange the new leaves in place, after which the clips are threaded through the perforations of the pile of leaves and by pressing their legs together, they can be placed in position in the opening in the keeper plate and by their natural resiliency, expand into engagement with said keeper plate, locking themselves against vertical movement in eitherdirec-- portion having a keeper plate provided with key hole openings, a detachable U-shaped Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
