These road rails are necessarily made in sections preferably of sheet steel rolled or pressed to the desired form'and arranged end to end along the edges of the proposed pavement for imparting the desired regularity-of finish and also for establishing the desired grade of the upper surfaces of said edges, while the pavementis under construction, it being understood that the upper surface of the adjacent portions of the pavement are finished substantially flush with the top faces of the road-rails along and upon which the surfacing machines are adapted to ride, and the main object of my present invention is to provide a light, strong and durable road-rail which may be easily and quickly installed in proper alinement along the edges of the road-bed and which will maintain its longitudinal and vertical alinement under the various strains to which it may be subjected during the construction and finishing of the pavement.
More particularly,,it is the object of this invention to provide a novel and practical staking device and securing means therefor, which can be depended upon for rigidly holding the rail sections in their alined positions, and which may be readily assembled or quickly removed.
Another object contemplates a new and improved type of wedge or cam locking member for engagement with the stake, insuring a secure clamping action therewith.
A still further object lies in the provision of reinforcing means for the cam or wedge locking surface. 7 e
Other objects and advantages in details of construction and operation will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters indicate like parts.

I have illustrated at l a section ofa partially completed pavement, the contour and grade of which is defined and the body of which is supported laterally by my im proved'form or rail, part of one section of which is shown in Figure 1. It will be understood by those skilled in theart that the rail form for a given length. of roadway is made of sections, resting end to end and removably secured together in any suitable manner which permits ready assembly and dismantling thereof. 7
For clearness of description, part of one rail section only has been shown, and includes a base flange 2 extending outwardly and laterally of the edge of the pavement.
Thisbase flange rests on the ground andsupports the vertical side 3 against which abuts the edge of the pavement. The height of this fiat vertical side 3 is preferably exactly that of the pavement to be built, the materials thereof being filled in to a point flush with the top of said side 3.;
vFormed outwardly and at right angles to the side 8' is an upper flange 4, extending parallel with the base flange 2, butpreferably of lesser width than said base flange. Extending downwardly from the outer edge of the top flange 4 is a short flange 5 paral lel with the side wall 3 and defining at the upper'edge-of the rail or form, a channel 6. Means are provided for securing the rail or form in rigid supporting position on the ground, including a substantially U shaped bracket having its closed sides 7 and 8 positioned one above the other respectively. The upper arm 7 of this bracket is formed upwardly at right angles thereto, extending as at 7 into the channel 6 where it is again bent at right angles, as at 9, such right angled portion lying parallel with the arm 7. Secured to the base'flange 2 of the rail b Y rivets 11 is the lower 7 a right angled support of an upwardly extending guide plate 12, the upper end of which extends into the channel (3, parallel and adjacent to the vertical arm 7. Rivets, or other suitable securing means 13 fasten the upper and lower end of the guide plate rigidly to the arms 7 and 10 of the bracket, and bolts 1 1, passing thru the overhanging flange 5 of the rail, the arm 7 and the plate 12 serve to secure these members to each other and tothe rail. It will be noted that the construction just described greatly reinforces the rail' at this point, strengthening it" against the stresses incident to the filling inof the paving material between the rails, and the weight of surfacing machines travelling thereover.
It will be noted that the guide plate 12 is'bent' "inwardly intermediate its ends, at 15', forming'a slide-way 1 6 with the arms T 'and10 of the bracket, for a purpose about to bedescribed.
The upper and lower sides 7 and 8 of the U bracket are provided with alined apertures 17 thru which passes a stake 18 to be. driven into the ground whereby the rail form may be securely held in proper position. The base flange 2 of the rail is cut away as at 19 to allow the stake to pass into the ground;
In order to lock the rail form to the stake and prevent'any possibility of its displace ment from properly alined position, a wedge shaped lockingelement or cam is guided in the slidewa-y 16 and engages the stake between such slideway and the vertical side 20 of the U bracket. This wedge includes two angle plates 21 an'd22of metal orother suitable material superimposed one upon the other and having two of their flanges, eX- tending in opposite directions and in the same plane, as at 23 and 24, forming a guide orflange slidable in the slideway 16. The outer edge of this element is tapered as at 25 thereby forming a wedge which engages the inher face of the stake 18. One end 26 ofithe wedge, is provided with inturned ears 27 for engagement with the guide plate 12 to prevent the wedge from slipping out of its slideway when the wider part of said wedge is notin engagement with the stake.
It is preferable not to rely entirelyon the surface provided by the adjacent edges of the wedge formed by the plates 21 and 22, for a positive lock for the stake 18, and for this reason-there is secured to the top and bottom of these plates, as by rivets 28, additional plates 29 and 30 which are preferably bling the effectiveness of the locking element.
If however the stake be of such material as to resist this biting action, the edges 31 and 32, because of their separation, form a very effective grip on the inner surface of the stake and prevent any possibility of a loose connection or of slipping.
The plates 29 and 30 posses the additional advantages of greatly reinforcing the wedge structure, and: thereby the entire lock ing device, and of presenting a wider gripping surface along'the stake engagingface of the wedge.
As the operation of thedevice described is obvious'froni th'e'foregoing, no detailed explanation thereof is necessary; Of course it will be understood that the embodiment herein shown and described'is'the preferred form only, and that it is susceptible to"various changes in details of construction and operation without departing 'from'the scope of my invention. 1 do not limit myself therefore, other than by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A'road form comprising a rail, a stake receiving member secured thereto, and a stake securing device including :a wedge shapedmemberhaving separated stake engaging surfaces.
2. A road form'comprising a rail, asta ke receiving member secured thereto, and a stake securing device including a wedge shaped member having a plurality of stake engaging surfaces.
3. A road form comprising a rail having flanges, a stake receiving member secured thereto, a stake in said member and a'stake securing device including a wedge shaped member provided'with means for biting into said stake at separated points.
4. A road form comprisinga rail, a stake receiving member secured thereto, az'stake in said member, a securingdevice'including a wedge provided with-means for biting into said stake-at separate-d points and a stake engaging surfaces on said wedge between saidmeans.
5. A road form comprising a -rail, a stake receiving'member secured thereto, a stake in said member, a wedge movable in said member and provided with a plurality of stake engaging surfaces located in different planes.
6. A' stake locking element for road forms comprising a Wedge provided with a guiding flange and a plurality of stake engaging surfaces.
7. A stake locking element for road forms comprising a Wedge provided With a guiding flange and a stake engaging surface, and
' reinforcing means for said Wedge.
8. A stake locking element for load forms comprising a Wedge provided With a guid- 10 ing flange and a stake engaging surface, re
inforcing plates on said Wedge, said plates also providing stake engaging surfaces.
