Description

Aug. 31 1926.
- s. SOLOMON OVERFLOW CLOSURE Filed Feb. 17, 1926 lNVENTOR t BY 5 ATTORNEY I Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UETE STATS PATENT OFFICE.
' SAM SOLOMON, on new YORK, n. Y.
OVERFLOW CLOSURE.
Application filed February My invention relates to improvements in an overflow closure for the drain of a bath tub, and the invention has to" its object to provide an attachment 01 this character which may be readily attachable to any type of bath cock for the purpose of raising the water level in the tub above the overflow openings thereof.
A further object of my invention is to afford a closure attachment for the purpose described, which is simple and cheap to man ufacture and which is easily applicable to any of the types of bath tubs using an overflow discharge ust beneath the bath cock.
One embodiment of my invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bath tub with bath cock and overflow cage and showing one embodiment of the present invention in attached position; Figure 2 is a substantially longitudinal sectional view taken through the fixture and attachment illustrated in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes a section of a bath tub having the usual bath cock 11 and guard 12 which is disposed over the overflow discharge opening 13, and arranged beneath the bath cock. The parts just described are well known and form no part of the present invention except in combination with the overflow closure attachment 1 1.
The attachment designed for use with the particular type of bath cook 11 illustrated in Figure 1, comprises a conically shaped rubber shield or shell 15, the open end thereof being adapted to be held in contact with the marginal portion or ring of the guard 12 so as to prevent water from entering the openings in the guard. At what becomes the uppermost point in the periphery of the open end of the shield 15, the latter is turned up to form a semicircular collar 16 which provides a passage 1'? into the shield 15 allowing water to overflow when the level of the upper edge of the collar 16 is reached.
The shield 15 is held in position by means 17, 1926. Serial No. 88,773.
of a spring holder 18, comprising a V-shaped spring portion 19 one arm of which is attached by means of a screw 20 to the apex of the shield, the screw being adjustable in a nut imbedded in the shield. The opposite arm of the holder is cut to include side portions which are curved about to engage at their upright edges and then soldered so as to form a tubular portion 21, the latter being slidable over the nozzle 22 of the bath cock 11 disposed between the two valves. It will be clear that the tension of the spring portion 19 will tend to separate the two arms and consequently force the shield 15 in the direction of the guard 12 thereby preventing the attachment from becoming disengaged from the bath cock.
In order to accommodate nozzles of varying sizes, the side members forming the tubular portion 21 are not attached together in some instances, as shown in Figure 2. A nozzle being inserted in the tubular portion 21 will merely cause the latter to separate.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an overflow attachment for tubs, having the nozzle of the bath cock overhanging the overflow opening, a resilient shell for engaging the margin of the overflow opening, comprising a member having a raised central portion to provide an outlet chamber between the overflow opening and the interior of the tub, the periphery of the member being cut away and provided with an upstanding collar to admit water from the tub above a certain elevation above the over-- flow opening, and a hanger for the shell comprising a split sleeve to embrace the nozzle of the bath cock and a springy projection integral with the sleeve and bent back upon itself and the end of the projection being attached to the apex of the shell, the tension of the springy projection being intended to hold the shell against the margin of the overflow opening. I
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
SAM SOLOMON.
