Description

ivrrn LOUIS OONIGISKY, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUSTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,799, dated February 16, 1875; application iiled October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS OONIGISKY, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bustles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawing is a representation of a front view ot' my bustle. Fig. 2 is a side view ofthe saine, and Figs. 3 and at are detail views.
This invention has relationto bustleswhich are designed for supporting ladies7 dresses; and it consists in combining, with means for sustaining a bustle on the back of the wearer, certain means whereby the bustle can be enlarged or contracted at pleasure, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A designates a waistband, which is provided with a buckle-fastening, a, in front, and to which the bustle is secured, as indicated at g g. The bustle is composed of bowed flexible strips B, all of which are secured to the waistband at g by means -ot' clinched clasps ot' any suitable kind. Between the ends of the bows B these bows are sustained in proper form by means ot' hoops O, which are made ot' a suitable dexible material `possessing the requisite degree of stiffness and elasticity. The drawings represent tive bows, B, and three spreading and supporting hoops, O; but in practice a greater or a less number of parts may be employed. Below the hoops O are the supporting-hooks Gr, which are respectively formed of the same piece of wire as their hoops O, and which have clasps E secured rigidly to them, having lips e,which receive between them and hold in place the hoops O. The ends of the supporting-hoops G are adj ustabl y attached to the extensions b of the hoops O by means of clasps F, and the ends of the hoops O are adjustably attached to said extensions b by means of clasps l). Clasps f are used for securing the bow-wires B to the hoops O.
It will be seen from the above description that clasps D will allow the main dress-supporting portions of the bustle to be expanded or contracted, and the clasps F will allow the hoops G to be contracted or expanded, so as to adapt their size to the adjustments given to the hoops O, and make them serve as supports for these latter hoops, whatever may be their size or diameter.
It will also be seen from the above description that while I preserve intact the supports for the bustle I am able to enlarge or reduce the size of this bustle at pleasure.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bustle composed of bows B, in combination with adjustable hoops O and adjustable supportin g-hoops Gr, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS OONIGISKY.
