THUMB TACK.

relates to improvements in thumb tacks, and has particular reference to a thumb tack which will not pierce or otherwise injure the material being held, which 5 kmaterial may be paper, cloth, etc.

The principal object of this invention is to produce a thumb tack which will tightly grip the material and retain t-he same until released.

Another object is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and therefore well within the purchase price of the average user.

A further object is to produce a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and easy to operate.

A still further object is to produce a thumb tack wherein the same, due to its peculiar construction, has its major portion outside of the margin of the object being held, thereby leaving the surface free.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

ploys a head and has a pin projecting therethrough, which pin passes throughthe obliect to be held and also into the supporting surface. The result is that the object being held is pierced and therefore marred.

I have overcome this difliculty by providing a thumb tack having a double head, between which the object is placed. By employing a wedge the double head is forced together and so holds the material to be held, without any marring of the same.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the Y numeral 5 designates a base plate having a 65 clown-turned pin 6. This base plate is provided with securing lugs 7 and 8 which serve to retain a top plate 9. This top plate is slidably bent as shown at 11 so as to rock upon the base plate 5. The top plate 9 has 70 an opening 12 therethrough, through which an operating button 13 projects. This operJ ating butto-n is secured to a wedge 14, which wedge is positioned between the top plate 9 and the base plate 5, as bestshown in Figures V, VI, and VII.

The operation of my thumb tack is as follows Y Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Figure VI, a piece of paper or so other material to be held is placed between the base plate 5 and the top plate 9 as designated by the letter A. It is'of course understood that the pin 6 has been previously embedded into the supporting surface. The wedge 14 is now moved inwardly so as to assume the position shown in Figure V. This causes a tipping action of the top plate 9 and therefore a gripping of the matter to be held results.

By pushing the button 13 and sliding the wedge to the position shown in Figure VI the object being held can be removed, and the same will be found to be entirely free from any marring whatsoever.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to lo@ without y,departing from the spirit. of the invention or the scope of the snbjoined claim.

In a thumb tack, a base portion having an outwardly projecting pin formed integral therewith, a top plate having a bend formed substantially across the center thereof, so as to have a rocking engagement with said base portion, lugs formed on said base portion for 10 top plate into gripping engagement with 15 said base.
