Description

i J. v. PAGANO SHADE FOR AUTOMOBILE HEADLI GHTS Filed June 15. 1925 Patented Aug. 31, 1926.
UNETED STATES JAMES V. PAGANO, OF BALTDVIORE, MARYLAND,
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO JACOB MYER AND ONE-FOURTH TO GEORGE C. HUBER, BOTH F BALTIMORE,
MARYLAND.
SHADE FOR AUTOMOBILE HEADLIGHTS.
Application filed. June 13, 1925.
This invention relates to head light dimmers and has special reference to a detachable shield for head light bulbs or lamps.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily applied shield which may be adjusted quickly over the head light lamp and, when so adjusted, will cut off all rays passing directly forward from the lamp through the head light lens.
A second object of the invention is to provide a shield of this character wherein the light rays emanating from the filament will be confined to certain restricted localities on the usual head light reflector.
A third object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein certain restricted parts of the reflector will re ceive rays from the filament while certain other parts of lesser area will also receive rays from the filament.
l Vith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a section through a head light reflector showing the dimmer applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a front view thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, the reflector being omitted.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line H of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail side elevation of a modified form of the reflector.
Figure 6 is a front view of the modified formshown in Figure 5.
In the form of this reflector shown a piece of sheet metal of substantially elliptical form is bent on its minor axis to form a tube having a relatively long front portion 10 and a relatively short rear portion 11. From the ends of this strip of metal, which is preferably made of spring metal, extend arcuate and opposed gripping members 12 which are formed to conform to the shank 13 of a head light lamp 14: having a fila meat 15. In the preferred form this metal Serial No. 36,796.
is slit to provide substantially trapizodial windows 16, the metal defined by the slits being bent outwardly to form reflector wings 17.
In applying the device it is simply necessary to spring the grips 12 onto the shank 13. hen in this position the front of the lamp will be shielded and light rays emanating from the filament 15 will be confined at the top and bottom to certain areas as indi cate by the dotted lines R, these lines also indicating the effective extent of forwardly thrown illumination. In the preferred form, with the side windows 16, small additional areas will also be illuminated as indicated by the dotted lines R, the respective illuminated areas being shown at A and A. Thus the illumination is confined to certain desired areas of the reflector.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A head light dimmer consisting of an elliptical sheet of metal bent on its minor axis to form a substantially tubular member and provided at each end of its major axis with a lamp base gripping finger, said finger being of like arcuate formation and positioned opposite each other with their con cave sides in confronting relation.
2. A head light dimmer consisting of an elliptical sheet of metal bent on its minor axis to form a substantially tubular memher and provided at the ends of its major axis with lamp base gripping fingers, said tubular member having lateral windows formed therein, and being provided with screen projections extending laterally from the member at the formed edges of said windows.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
JAMES V. PAGANO.
