Description
S. R. R000.
Adjustable Hold-Back.
WCS l. y M iff/haw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE0 SAMUEL R. ROOD, OF MONTELLO, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE HOLDBACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,71 l, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December 8, 1874.
To all whom -it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. ROOD, Of Montello, county of Marquette and State of Wisconsin, have invented an Improved Adjustable Holdback, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompan yin g plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specitication, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to the iron on the thill or pole of a vehicle, commonly known as the holdback; and the nature of my invention consists in certain improvements in the details of the construction of the same, hereinafter described and shown.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a view of the pole of a carriage having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section through the pole and adjustable holdback.
In the said drawings, A designates that portion of the pole to which the adjustable hold back is to be applied, which is of uniform character, and provided with a series of slots, a. B designates the adjustable holdback, which consists of an under block, O, of castiron, to which the top piece D of heavy bandiron is securely riveted. A slot is cut in the under block for the reception of the catchpiece E, which is provided with a pawl or projection, H, of proper size to catch and securely lit the slots cut in the pole.
The catch-piece is pressed upward by the spring K in such a manner that when the holdback is moved along the pole the pawl H will catch in the slots a.
It is obvious that the holdback may be adjusted at any point upon the pole which may be deemed desirable.
The advantages oi' the adjustable holdbaek are obvious. lt enables us to harness teams of various sizes to the same vehicle without altering the traces.
Having thus described the construction of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pole provided with a series of slots and the adjustable holdback,
consisting of the under block O, top piece D,
catch-piece E, and spring K, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of
