UNITED'TSTATEIS PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHAN PODMAYER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO STABILITY LEATHER GOODS MFG. CO., OF ST. LOUIS, IJIISSO'URIQA CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
' BAGGAGE LOCK.
Application filed February 2, 1925. Serial No. 6,189.
This invention relates to devices by which suitcases or other baggage may be sealed, so that they cannot be opened without breaking the seal. 7
The principal object of the present invention is to provide the lock of the suit-case or other baggage with means for enabling a sealing device to be easily and quickly attached to the suit-case. Other objects are simplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness of design.
The invention consists principally in providing the cooperating members of a suitcase lock with means adapted, in the closed position of the lock, to be secured together by a sealing device adapted to be broken by opening the bag. in the parts and rangements of parts hereinafter and claimed. I
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
' Fig. 1 is atop view of a portion of a suit case equipped with a hasp-lock provided with means embodying my invention, by
which thelock may be sealed;
2 isan end elevation of a suitcase showing the swinging hasp disengaged from the lock mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a face view of a lock casing; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the outer end portion of the swinging hasp;
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with a hasp lock A for securing together the two hinged sections of a suitcase or other baggage B. The hasp lock comprises a lock casing 5 and a hasp member 6 secured to the respective hinge sections adjacent to their meeting'edges. The lock casing supports a in the combinations and ardescribed lock mechanism com )risin a s rino ro-' b 2-,
jected bolt/T adapted to be retracted by means of a pushblock 8, except when it islocked with a key (not shown) adapted to be inserted in a key-hole 9 provided therefor in said push-block. The bolt -7 has a beveled end portion adapted, in the projected position of the bolt, to extend into a The invention also consists 7 slot or opening 10 formed in the lock casing; andthe swinging hasp member 6 of the lock is provided on its under side with a keeper 11 arranged to enter said slot and engage the beveled end of said bolt, which slides or catches 111 an opening provided therefor in.
said keeper. This construction of hasp-lock is well known and it is considered unnecessary to illustrate it in detail.
The swinging hasp 6 of the hasp-lock is provided adjacent to the keeper 11 with an elongated slot 12 adapted, in the closed position of the lock, to receive an apertured outstanding ear or lug 13 on the lock casing 5 adjacent to one margin of the slot- 10, which secures the aperture and keeper 11 on the swinging hasp 6. The lock is sealed by extending; a shackle, preferably in the form of a wire, band, or cord 14:, through the opening in the ear or lug 13 on the lock cas ing 5 at a point located above the swinging hasp 6 and securing the free ends of the shackle by a seal, preferably in the form of a compressible or deformable disk 15.'
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that my invention provides a cheap,
simple and compact device by which the suitcase lock may be easily and quickly sealed so that the lock cannot be opened without breaking or rupturing the seal, thus ing into a slot in said casing, and a swinging hasp having an apertured keeper adapted to enter the slot in said lock casing and engage the bolt therein, one marginal portion of said slot being formed with an outstanding apertured ear and said hasp being formed adjacent to the apertured keeper thereof with an openingadapted to receive wit-lithe outstanding car on said lock casing said apertured earbeing formedby bending out a portion of the metal removed from said slot. I f i Signed at St. Louis, Missouri,'this th day of January, 1925. I
