My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices, and more particularly has reference to a device of the class described especially adapted for use upon travelling bags, luggage, trunks, and similar articles.

In both forms of the device, the outer housing 11 is preferably provided with base prongs 12, which pass through the plate or escutcheons 5, 6, and are bent over thereunder to secure the housing in position, as shown, the same applying to the smaller housing 12', secured to the escutcheon orbase 6. Within this housing 11 is slidably mounted a channel like structure 13, preferably having a closed end 14, and opened end 15. i A flat steel spring 16 is preferablysecured thereto by a rivet or other suitable means as indicated at 17, the free end of said spring being bent or formed substantially as shown, thus providing a seating for the cross-bars 18 of the finger-piece 9, forming a cam-like member, so
' that when the free end 19 of said cam-like member is' lifted, the rectangular cross-bar portion having an enlarged central area serving as a tongue, lifts the free end of the spring 16, striking the shoulder 20 thereof, and forcing the channel-like carriage 13 righti wardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. The
other end of the channel-like member 13 is cut-away to receive the square frame-likeportion 10, and the outer casing 11, at the sides, is cut-away to allow for the longitudinal movement of the same when the channel-like carriage 13 is moved by the finger-piece 19. This frame-like holder 10 has a tongue-like I portion 21, which engages beneath the open end 22, of the housing 12, when the fastener is in closed position, so thatwhen the fingerpiece 19 is elevated, as shown in Fig. 4, the frame holder 10 is pushed rightwardly,looking at Fig. 4, clearing the tongue 23 of the open end of the housing 12, and allowing the same'tobe thrown clear thereof, as indicated in dotted outline, thus allowing the cover of the bag ortrunk to be lifted. When the cover is returned, the frame holder 10 is pushed back into the position for. engaging the housing 12, and the finger-piece 19 is returned to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby again drawing the tongue into the housing, securely locking the cover inposition, said housing 12 having the usual guide tongue 24, which engages the open end of the housing 11 in the 7:- usual manner.
The finger-piece 19 is also perforated, as indicated at 25, and a hole 26 is also preferably formed in the base portion 5 in alignment therewith, and likewise preferably a g half round hole 27 in the periphery thereof, as shown, to facilitate passing a wire through the said opening for sealing the fastener in locked position.
A modification of this arrangement is shown in Fig. 1, where the cam-like fingerpiece is preferably provided with a leverlike end to be engaged between the fingers for operating the same, said lever having a hole therethrough for the passage of the lug'29, extending up from the base'5, also having a hole 30 for the passage of the wire 31, the free ends of which may be secured in the seal 32.
Ofcourse it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construc- J tion and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
