LOCKING nnvrcn r -App1icati on filed June 13,
To aZZ whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPrrHnNRI TAIL- Lnrnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing atuRigaud, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certainnew'and useful Improvements in Looking Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear; and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same, 2 I f Thepresent invention relates to new and useful improvements in looking devices.-
The primary object of the invention is theprovision of alocking device which is a continuation of my former United States Letters Patent No. 1,358,086;
Another object of the invention is the provision of a locking device including a pair of oppositely disposed pivoted latches with a key for manipulating the latter and forcing them to their releasing position and also means for preventing access to the look by an unauthorized person.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a locking device including a keeper for engagement with the pivoted latch members so constructed. as to always readily engage'the same, thus saving time in looking or unlocking the gate, door, or other closure to which vthe said locking de vice is attached. 1
' With the above and other objects in'view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the present application, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a lock constructed in accord ance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is anend view thereof; I Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view; Figure 4 is a side elevation, Figure 5 is a plan view of keepers; v
Figure 6 is a side view thereof; and, Figure 7 is a side elevation of the key. Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 7 designates in general a portion one of the of a closure such as a vestibule gate or the 1921. Serial No. Males.
" like to which my improved locking device 8 is secured. -This locking device 8 comprisesa. casing 9 formed at oneend with a sleeve 10 through which one of the end membersof the gate is inserted and retained in position by fastening elements such shown atll. v s
1 The casing 59 is of rectangular hollow for mation and is provided with a pair of piv oted latch members 12,. the outer ends of hous1ng,.9.. One end of the upper latch memberlQ is bifurcated asat let, while the correspondopening l provided in the end wall'of the I which are'toothed and extend through an ing. endof the lower. latch member is reoperating ends of the latches 12in order to prevent unauthorized opening by means of making a key which Wlll. fit the same.
The key is shown at 19 and is provided with ca reduced end 20 adapted to pass through the opening '17 Suitable lugs 21 and 22 are provided on one side thereof, the
former of which engages the opposite sides of the bifurcated end 14 of the upper latch member, forcing the latter upwardly, while the lug 22 engages the reduced end 15 of the lower latch member, forcing the inner ends of the said latch members apart and contracting the forward or outer ends thereof, thus releasing the samefrom the slot 23 formed in the transverse plate 24 of the keeper 25. c c r The outer end of the keeper 25 is flared as at 26 to insure of the easy insertion of the latch members 12 therein.
An addltlonal keeper for retaining the gate or closure in open position is indicated by the numeral 27, and is shown in Figures 5 and 6. This keeper comprises a base 28 having flanges 29 formed thereon, which support a stop plate 30 provided with horizontal and vertical side flanges 31 and 32 flared at their outer ends, as at 33, and with a transverse plate 34c having a slot for engaging the latches 12 and retalnlng the closure or gate in open position.
connection with the accompanying draw- .ingyit will be manitestthat a locking de V106? for gates, doors and other closures is provided, which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements or such a device, and it shouldbe understood-in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can lie-resorted to with in the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit orsacrificing any of the advantages or the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. The herein described locking %device comprising a casing, oppositely operating latch members provided in said casing, the
inner ends of said latch members being interlocked, and adaptedfor engagei'nent by a key.
2. The herein described locking device comprising a casing having an opening in the end thereof, pivoted latch members mounted Within the casing and projected through said opening, a spring engaging the latch members for forcing them to looking position, the inner ends of the latch members being interlocked, and being adapted forseparation by akey.
3. The herein described locking device comprising a casing, said casing having an opening in one end thereof, upper and lower latch members pivoted Within the casing 1 Josnrn HENRI TA LEFER.
