M. L. BEISTLE I ORNAMENTAL BASKET STRUCTURE Filed Feb. 5. 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented .luly 27, 1926.

.. to M1 a 'ORNAMENTAL 35A Application filed February This invention relates to ornamental articles including a flat section formed of .itolded tissue paper and adapted for conversion into arelatively large decorative structure when the folded sections are opened or expanded.
The invention relates particularly to an ornamental basket and has for its object the provision of a single continuous member forming the handle and base for the basketportion. A. vertical slot is formed in the lower part of the base into which is fitted the folded tissue member which is adapted to form when expanded the circular bowl of the basket. By thus using a continuous base member on which the i'oldable parts are mounted a very rigid and sturdy device is produced.
lVhile I have disclosed a single embodiment of the invention for purposes of illustration, it should be understood that the structure may be modified in various ways without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a basket in expanded condition.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the basket in folded condition.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the base member.
Fig. l is a section on line 1-4: of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, at 10 is shown the flat base member formed of a continuous piece of cardboard or other suitable material, having a handle portion 11 and a bottom portion 12. A vertical slot 13 extends upwardly from the lower edge of the base member. The fiat semi-circular member 14: is formed of tissue so pasted together that it has a cellular structure when expanded. lhe member 14 is inserted at its center in the slot 13, and is fastened at 13 to opposite sides of the base member, as will be clear from Figs. 2 and a.
An arc-shaped end piece 15 is secured to the part of expansible member 1 1 exposed on each side of the base member. This end piece protects the fragile enpansible member from injury When the basket is folded, and provides a means for holding the member 1 1 in a fully expanded condition. The end piece 15 visible in'Fig. 2 is formed with a tongue 16 which, in unfolding member 14,

is carried over toward the right and secured in the notch 1?. A similar holding means is provided ior'the opposite end piece 15.
Vi hen both end pieces are secured in open position the member 1 1 is fully expanded and provides a circular bowl-shaped basket as shown in Fig. 1.
A, folded member 18 may be attached to the base .member if desired. This member 18 when unfolded produces the eggs 19 in the manner disclosed in my copending application No. 85,868, filed June 9, 1925.
By forming the base member With a slot 18 closed at one end, it is unnecessary to use a wire stitch or any other separate means to secure together the laminations oi the expansible member 14 as required in the structure of my copending application.
It will be apparent that the base member may be of any desired shape or design, and that the expansible basket portion may be given various forms Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
hat I claim is 1. In an ornamental article, a base member having a slot therethrough, and an expansible member of cellular tissue inserted in said slot.
2. In an ornamental article, a base member having a slot therethrough, and a flat enpansible member oi cellular tissue inserted in said slot and adapted when expanded to simulate a body extending beyond both sides of said base member.
3. In an ornamental article, a base member having "formed therein a slot closed at one end, and an expansible member inserted in said slot.
4. In an ornamental article, a base member having formed therein a slot closed at one end, and an eXpansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member.
5. In an ornamental article, a base member having formed therein a slot, an expansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member, and end pieces secured to the exposed sides 01? said expansible member.
6. In an ornamental article, a base member having formed therein a slot, an expansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member, and end pieces secured to the exposed sides of said expansible member, said end pieces carrying fastening means adapted to engage with the base member.
7. In an ornamental basket, a base member having a handle portion, said base member having formed therein a slot, and an expansible member inserted in said slot.
8. In an ornamental basket, a base member having a handle portion, said base. member having formed therein a slot, and an expansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member.
9. In an ornamental basket, a base member having a handle portion, said base member having formed therein a slot, an expansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member, and end pieces secured to the exposed sides of said eXpansible member.
10. In an ornamental basket, a base member having a handle portion, said base member having formed therein a slot, an expansible member inserted in said slot and fastened to opposite sides of said base member, and end pieces secured to the exposed sides of said expansible member, said end pieces carrying fastening means adapted to engage with the base member.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
