ORNAMENTAL BASKET STRUCTURE.
Application filed June 9, 1925. Serial No. 35,868.
This invention relates generally to articles formed by opening or expanding folded tissue forms and more particularly to a basket adapted to be folded to a relatively flat condition and to be expanded to form a basket filled with suitable objects.
rThe invention includes a basket handle member formed of cardboard stock, or the like, of suitably rigidity. rlChe handle member is arranged to form a framework including portions that extend toward each other in the region of the base portion of the basket. On one side of one and the other side of the other of the inwardly directed extensions is mounted a foldable tissue member representing` when expanded two semi-circular half portions of a basket. Fach half basket portion is provided at its free end with a reinforcing member adapted to be hooked or otherwise attached to the opposite section of the handle member.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of foldable members representing objects such as eggs, baby chicks or the like, which can be expanded to occupy space within the basket, the members being attached to the handle or the extensions thereof.
lt will be seen that an article of the general type described has been provided which normally folds to a fiat condition and can be readily expanded to represent an ornamental basket lilled with suitable objects.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter referred to.
1n the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of the invention has been selected for illustration,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an ornamental basket embodying the invention and shown in expanded or open condition.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the device in its folded condition.
Figure is a view in side elevation of a frame member used in the construction of the device.
Figure 4c is a view in side elevation showing a pair of secondary frame or supporting members used in the construction of the device.
Figure 5 is a view'showing a pair of end frame members for cooperation with the frame members shown in Figure 4;.
Figure 6 is a view of an expansible paper tissue basket member shown in its folded condition.
l Figure 7 is a perspective view of a `folded. tissue member which is adapted to be expanded to form an egg-like object.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 88 of Figure 2.
F igure9 is a detail showing the cellular construction of the expanded structure.
Referring tov the drawings for a more detailed description of the invention, at 10 is shown a basket handle member formed of relatively rigid material such as cardboard. The handle member 10 is provided with inwardly extending portions 11 at the lower ends thereof which terminate at points relatively closeto each other as at 12.
The inwardly directed terminal portions 11 of the handle 10 provide supports for an expansible member 13 formed of tissue paper, or the like, which is shown in a flat or folded condition in Figures 2 and 6 of the drawing. rlhe member 13 is attached permanently in flat form at its rcentral portion as at 14 t0 thereby provide a hinge about which the portions at either side of the clip 12 may be opened to provide a substantially circular structure asis shown in Figure 1 which represents a basket body portion.
It will be seen that the foldable member 13 is attached at one side to a face of the handle extension 11 and at the other side t0 the opposite face of the opposite handle extension portion 11. With this construction one-half o f the member 11 may be opened out to provide a semi-circular section repre senting the one-half porti-on of a basket body member, the other member being expanded in like manner to provide the remaining half section and thereby complete the circle and produce a completed basket body section.
1n order to hold the expanded portions in their unfolded condition, hook members 15` and 16 are provided in the handle member 10 and the frame members 17 which are attachedto the unattached sides of the members 13 as is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The hook members 15 and 16 are so formed as to be brought into attaching engagement with each other to complete the desired basket formati-on.
Not only is a basket-like structure pro' vided by the expansible tissue member 13 but provision is also made for supplying objects to be placed or contained within the basket as in Figure 1 of the drawing. These objects or articles may simulate eggs, chicks or the like and are preferably formed of expansible tissue in a similar manner to that employed in the construction of the basket body portion 13.
Each member 17 carries at its inner end an upward extension 19 along the upper edge of which is fastened one side of a semi-cir-v cular folded member 18. A frame member 2O is attached to the outer side of the folded member 1S in such a manner that it can pivot about the side Q4. Folded members 25 and 26, similar to member 18, are fastened between frame members 19 and Q0 along sides adjacent to the pivoted sides. In order to expand the members 18, 25 and 26 the tab 27 formed on the lower side is lifted upwardly, causing the frame member 2O to pivot about the side 24T. As the frame member 2O moves toward a position vertically above, and in the same plane with, extension 19 the meinbers 25 and 26 are spread out fan-wise in planes at right angles to the extension 19. As the member 2O is inclined further toward the rear the members 25 and 26 bend around over the sides of members 19 and 20, until when the frame member comes to rest in contact with the rear side of extension 19, the members and 26 have assumed the shape of eggs 28' and 29. Meanwhile member 18 has expanded into egg 21.
A. further addition to the device may take the form of members 22 preferably formed integrally with the handle member l() and representing chick-like objects. In like manner a card 23 may be formed integrally with the handle member 10.
It will be seen that an ornamental basket has been provided which normally is folded in a flat condition to render it convenient for shipping or storage and which can be easily expanded to provide the ornamental article described. The cellular structure of the expanded basket and egg-like members is of itself attractive and the device as a whole is designed to provide an interesting and attractive toy or ornamental device. While the particular device illustrated and described represents an Easter basket it will be clear that many departures may be made from the precise construction shown but without exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
