UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE CHARLES J; COYLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,249, dated Februaly 2, 1875; application led June l5, 1874.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES QI. COYLE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usetul Improvement in Shirt-Bosoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ot' the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is an adjustable and reversible frontispiece or center plait for shirt-bosoms, by the use of which several sizes ot collars can be worn without interfering with the sizes of the yoke or tit of the shirt, thereby enabling a person to wear any of the known styles of high, medium, or low cut; and, being susceptible ot' reversing, different faces can be exhibited from the same plait, such as embroidered on the one side and corded or stitched on the other.
The nature of the invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure l is a plain view of a shirt-bosom prepared to receive my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plain view with the center plait A elevated and attached. Fig. 3 is a plain view with the center plait A and collar B attached, and adjusted at the lowest point. Fig. 4 is a plain view with center plait A and. collar B attached and elevated. Fig. 5 is a section through the bosom C and center plait A, showing the manner ot attachment with the studs or buttons.
In order to attach the center plait to the body of the bosom and render it adjustable, I make a series of eyelet-holes in the bosom, as shown at D D D, and pass the buttons or Wires of the studs through both-the center plait and the desired holes in the bosom, as shown at E in Fig. 5. At the top of the center plait I make either a button-hole or place a button there, to which I attach the collar, as shown at F in Fig. 4.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a shirt-bosom, having suitable eyelets or fastenings to regulate the size of the collar-band, an adjustable reversible center plait, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
rIhis specification signed and witnessed this 27th day of May, 1874.
CHARLES J. COYLE.
