I*UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. GOIT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELING-TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,248, dated February 2,1875; application filed January 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Corr, of the city and county of New York and State of New York, have invented a newiand useful Improvement in Traveling-Trunks, for the purpose of securing the contents from disturbance in the handling and rough treatment to which such trunks are usually exposed in transit 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, and to the.
figures and letters marked thereon, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a trunk with my improvement; Fig. 2, a detachable compartment.
The nature of my invention consists in providing straps or fastenings within the trunk, by which the clothing` or other articles may be conned to the bottom of the trunk, or to the top or lid compartment, and thus be retained in place even when the trunk is only partially tilled, or is accidentally broken open.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction or arrangement and the mode of operating the same.
I attach the straps A A securely to the bottom of the trunk B B, or to the lower part of the sides, as shown at A', and having packed the trunk with the clothing or articles to be carried in it, I place on top of such articles the partition C, which should be thin and light, and fasten it down upon such clothing or articles by the straps A A. I sometimes,
also, make a detachable compartment, as
shown in Fig. 2, by making a second packing on top of partition C, and covering it with the partition D, which is secured down upon the package by the straps E E, attached to the partition C; and this second package is secured to the iirst one, or to the trunk, bydrawing the straps A A over it, and similar packing may be formed in the lid if it have sufficient depth for the purpose.
It will readily be perceived that when a trunk is thus packed and secured, any one of the packages can be got at and opened without disturbing the others, and that they will all be retained in place, whether the trunk is cornpletely lled or not.
Having thus described my improvements in traveling-trunks, what I claim therein as my invention, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A traveling-trunk having straps A A scoured to the bottom thereof, in combination with partitions C, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. A traveling-trunk having straps A A secured to the bottom thereof, in combination with detachable compartments composed ot' the partitions C and D and straps E E, substantially as shown and described.
