V .DOOR-OPENING DEVIGE.
I AppIication filed Tiay 31, 1924. Serial No. 717,095.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automobile door attachments, and has for its principal object to providea simple and efficient means whereby an automobile door may be easily and rea ily opened, upon the release of the usual door latch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door opening device of the above mentioned character, which is especially adapted for use in connection with closed cars of the Ford type, and will obviate the necessity of a person having to kick or otherwise knock on the door to open the same, after the latch has been released.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a door opening device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, in Xpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved attachment, showing the same in position on the inside of an automobile body.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the door opening device.
, In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a swinging door, of a closed car, preferably of a Ford type, and the same is mounted in the door frame 2, inthe usual manner. The latch operating lever is illustrated at 3, and as the same is of any conventional construction and forms no important part of the present invention, a further detailed description is not thought necessary.
Secured to the inside of the door, adjacent the free side edge thereof is the plate 4, the securing means being illustrated at 5. A. bracket 6 is secured to the door frame 2, adjacent the plate 4, and is secured thereon by means of the fastening screws 7 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Adapted to be supported in the bracket 6 and further adapted for pivotal movement therein is the lateral extension 8 of an elongated lever 9, which depends downwardly from the bracket, and formed on the outer end of the lateral extension is the upstanding looped portion 10. The loop portion 10 is adapted to engage the metallic plate l and is normally disposed in the position as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing. The depending port-ions '9 of the lever is flattened to provide a handle 10, whereby the same may be easily operated.
The use of my improved door opening device maybe briefly stated as follows:
Ordinarily great dificulty is experienced in opening the doors of a Ford automobile from the inside, and oftentimes a person has to kick or knock on the door, after the latch has been released, in order to swing the same to an opening position. The purpose of the present invention is to obviate the necessity of having to spend considerable time and labor, in an attempt to open the door, and by merely moving the handle portion 10 of the lever 9 laterally, after the latch 3 has been released, the loop portion 10 will engage the metallic plate t on the door and exert an upward pressure thereon causing the door to swing to an open position, without any difficulty. The simplicity of my device enables the same to be readily and easily attached in position on the inside of an automobile and not interfere with the closing of the door or with a person in passing through the door opening; The simplicity of my device furthermore enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost and the parts will further be strong and durable.
T e provision of the metallic plate l, provides a means whereby the loop portion 10 will be prevented from defacing the door,
when the same is in use.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to beunderstood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a device for opening an automobile door, wherein said door is of the swinging type and is provided with appropriate lapped means, said device being adapted to be operated after the latch is released and comprising a bear operating handle, a cam 100p cooperating ing bracket adapted to be connected to the with a Wear plate, and a portion between door frame, a wear plate adapted to be consaid loop and handle forming a journal for 10 nected to the door at a point adjacent said rotation in the bearing of said bracket. bracket, and an operating member, said In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
operating member being formed from a single length of heavy Wire bent to form an VILLIAM B. KLECKNER.
