IMPROVEMENT IN SCARFS.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,112, dated January 26, 1875; application tiled November 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW MUELLER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Photograph-Searts, of which the following is a specication:

Figure l is a view of the scarf with the slidingfront piece depressed to expose the photograph behind it. Fig. 2 is a view showing the slide drawn back to place and covering the photograph, and Fig. 3 a sectional view.

Similar letters in the drawing refer to like parts.

My invention has for its object to provide a scarf for mens neck wear adapted to hold a photograph or other illustration, design, or emblem in a concealed position, excepting when the wearer desires to expose it to view. To this end the invention consists in a scarf having a sliding front piece, held in place by suitable springs, and adapted to be depressed by pulling downward on a pendent cord extending below the scarf on the back side, 4the depression of the sliding piece lexposing to view a photograph or other like object placed behind it, the springs drawing up the front piece when the cord is released, thereby eovering the photograph, as I will now proceed to describe.

In the drawings, A represents the Scarf, having a stiff back piece, B, to which the photograph C is attached in Such manner as to be readily removed and replaced by another, the back piece being provided with parallel guide-strips, between which the photograph is inserted. The front of the scarf is preferably provided with longitudinal folds d d at its edges, and between these with transverse folds, c c, the upper folds, e, aflixed to a stationary Strip, e', as shown in Fig. 2, the remainder being affixed to a sliding piece, F, which is composed of any suitable stiff material, and is conned by suitable guides attached to the back piece, B. -G G are springs, composed preferably of elastic strips, connecting the sliding piece F with the back piece, B, and holding the former in an elevated position when they are in their natural contracted state, thereby concealing the photograph, as shown in Fig. 2. H is a strip or cord attached to the lower end Of the sliding piece F, and extending downward behind the scarf and below the lower end of the latter, where it can be readily grasped by the wearer when he wishes to depress lthe piece F in order to expose the photograph or design behind it, the springs G drawing the piece F back to its place when released.

This device constitutes a pleasing and popular novelty. A printed motto or phrase adapted to convey the idea to a persistent talker that he is becoming tiresome may be substituted for a photograph with good results, as the part exposed is immediately under the wearers chin. and consequently in a position to attract the attention of a person addressing him.

I claim as my inventionl. A scarf having a sliding front piece, held by suitable springs, and covering a photograph or other similar object, and adapted to be depressed by the wearer, so as to expose the photograph to View, substantially as shown and described.

2. A scarf provided with a back piece, B, adapted to hold a photograph or other like object, the sliding piece F, the springs G, and cord H, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
