UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER T. EADS, OF HARVEY, ILLINOIS.
BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,039, dated October 6, 1896.
Application filed June 25, 1896- Serial No. 596,850- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, OLIVER '1. EADS, of Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices designed to be worn upon a persons coat or vest to afford amusement or to serve as a hint to a questioner that the person wearing the device is receiving more inquiries upon his private affairs than he deems necessary.
The invention comprises the representation of a man, in which there is a relative movement between the head and body portion, and means attached to the head for connecting the device to an article of clothing.
The invention further consists in the com struction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafterspecified, and particularlypointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The badge comprises a body portion 1 of box-like construction and stamped out of suitable metal. Its lower end 2 is curved rearward, and from this lower end a back plate 3 extends upward, and to the lower end of the body portion a cord or similar connection 4 is attached. As here shown, the back plate 3 is separated from the main body portion 1, and the cord at is passed through the side openings and over the inner side of the bottom portion 2.
Movable relatively to the body portion 1 is a head portion 5, stamped out of suitable metal, and this head portion 5 has an elongated neck portion 6 extended down into the body portion. This neck portion 6 has a length substantially that of the body portion, and it is guided in its vertical movements by means of a plate 7, cut from and extended inward and engaging at its edges against the inner sides of the neck portion. This plate 7 is arranged near the upper end of the body portion, and the lower end of the neck portion is turned inward, as at 8. This portion 8, by striking against the plate 7, will prevent a complete separation of the parts. Therefore the parts 7 and 8 provide a stop.
A spring 9 is connected at its lower end with the plate '7 and at its upper end to the inner side of the head 5 at the top thereof. This spring 9 will allow a downward movement of the body portion relatively to the head portion, but upon releasing the body portion the said spring willreturn the body portion to its normal position.
A device for securing the body to an article of clothing is attached to the head portion 5. As here shown, this fastening device consists of a pinlO, having pivotal or swinging connection at one end with the inner side of the head and adapted to engage at its free end in a keeper 11, attached to the inner side of the head.
From the above description the operation of the device is quite obvious. It may be stated, however, that a wearer upon receiving undue attention from a visitor or becoming tired of the questions of the visitor may display the device, and then by drawing downward on the string at move the body portion 1 relatively to the head portion 5, which will give the appearance of elongating or stretching the neck of the badge, this stretchin g of the neck serving as a hint to the visitor that further questioning is not desired.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A badge having the representation of a human being, and comprising a body portion and a head portion, the said head portion having an elongated neck extending into the body portion, the said body portion being adapted to slide on the neck portion, and a spring connecting the head portion with the body portion, substantially as specified.
2. A badge, comprising a body portion and a head portion, one part having a movement relatively to the other part, the head part having an elongated neck extended into the body portion, a string or similar device connected to the body portion, a spring connected at one end to the body portion and at the other end to the head portion, and a fastening device on the head portion, substantially as specified.
3. A badge, having the representation of a human being and comprising a body portion and head portion, the body portion being movable relatively to the head portion, an elongated neck portion extended from the head into the body portion, the lower end of said neck being turned inward to engage with an inwardly-turned plate at the upper end of the body portion, and a spring connected at one end to said inwardly-turned plate and at the other end to the inner side of the head at the top, substantially as specified.
4. A badge, comprising a body portion of box-like construction having a back plate,
the upper end of which has an inwardlyturned portion or plate, a head portion having an elongated neck extended into the body portion and guided in its movement by the inwardly-turned portion of the back plate, the said inwardly-turned portion of the back plate also serving as a stop to prevent a complete detachment of the parts, a spring extended from said inwardly-turned portion to a connection with the inner side of the head portion near its top, and a fastening-pin on the head portion, substantially as specified.
