UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`WILLIAM G. ALGEO, SR., AND WILLIAM G. ALGEO, JR., OF ROCHESTER,
` PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURIAL-GASKETS.
Specification formingp art of Letters Patent No. 159 ,059, dated January 26,1875; application filed September 11,1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM G. ALGrEo, Sr., and WILLIAM G. ALGEo, Jr., of Roches ter, in the county of Beaver and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Inside Finish for Coffins and Gaskets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of' this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a casket embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a view of' the top. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a vertical transverse section.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in cach.
. Our invention relates to the manner of finishing burial-caskets and coffins; and it consists in providing the edges of the sides with a separate rim or finish, which is the detached base rim of the top, said rim projecting inwardly sufficiently far to give support to the lining, but not to such an extent as would narrow the casket, and projecting outwardly, so that the upper faces of the finish or rim may be thickened up and molded and rab beted, for thepurpose of guiding the top to its seat, and for ornamentation.
Heretofore, in the manufacture of wooden cons, the edge ofthe coffin or casket upon which the top rested has generally been made plain, so that when the top was removed the body of the coffin had a box-like appearance, unfinished, and often uneven. It is the object of the present invention to overcome such obj ectionable features bysurmountin g the body of the casket or coffin with a separate rim, which is, in fact, the rim or base of the top detached from the top, and connected with the case, so that, though serving as a inish to the casket when the top is removed, yet, when the top is replaced, the whole presents the appearance of the ordinary casket or coin.
In the drawing referred to, A represents the coffin or casket, provided with the top B. The edges of the body A are capped by a rim, a, extending entirely around the edge, and made to project beyondl the outside edges, projecting inward sufficiently far to give attachment to the lining, but not sufficient to narrow the casket. This rim a, is permanently1 connected to the case A, and is thickened up at the point a] or inner edge, so as to be molded, as shown in the drawing, or otherwise ornainented, and is also rabloeted at a2, to receive the top B and guide it to its seat. The top B is devoid of the usual base rim, but is rabbeted at b to correspond with the rim a., so that when the top is in position the rim a will appear to be a part of the top B. The top may be faced at b, or where it cornes in contact with case A, with cloth or similar material, so as to deaden the noise th at is sometimes made when the top is placed on the casket. The top may be secured in the usual manner.
The casket or coffin is of' wood, and constructed in the ordinary Way, except in so far as above specified.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a wooden coffin, a separate rim-piece, a, secured to the coiin-edge, projecting inwardly to aord support for the lining, and having upon its inner edge an upwardly-projecting Bange, molded or otherwise ornamented upon its interior, and rabbeted or perpendicular upon its exterior side to hohl the cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofwe, the said WILLIAM G. ALGEo, Sr., and WILLIAM G. ALGEO, J r., have hereunto set our hands.
WILLIAM G. ALGEO, SR'. WILLIAM G. ALGEO, JR. Witnesses:
