*UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN KEENAN, OF BROWNVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFINS FROM PAPER OR OTHER PULP.
spcification forming pm of Letters Patent No. 123,781, dated February 2o, 1812.
l To all whom 'it may concer/n:
` Be it known that I, FRANKLIN KEENAN, of Brownville, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coffins; and that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specifr cation. Y
The object of this invention is to produce a o cofln which shall be cheap, strong, light, and
veasily made.
The invention consists in Inaking the coffin of any suitable pulp, and then forming it in molds in the manner hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawingFig ure 1 is a plan view` of my invention, and Fig. 2 a side view, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like Y parts in the several figures.
A represents a cofn, which may be of any desirable shape and size, audit differs from cofns as ordinarily made, in that, instead of being constructed of Wood or metal, it is made forms the pulp'into a compact mass. The mold with the pulp therein is then inclosed in a cylinder or other suitable steam-tight vessel, and by admitting steam to said vessel it entirely surrounds the mold inside and out, and effectually dries the coffin, which may then be readyily removed by takingthe mold apart. The
coffin is thus produced with the bottoln sides and ends in one continuous compact body, the lid being formed'separate from the body of the coffin; also, by pulp in molds, in a similar manner to that above described; after Which the coffin may be smoothed with pumice, if desired, and suitably finished to represent various kinds of Woods, on lacquered to r/epre/7 sent metal. W7 f f It will be observed that the lid of my cofn has a molding or lip, which projects around andover the upper edge of the coffin, so that, while the projecting edge or lid furnishes a means of securing the lid to the coffin by passing screws through it into the cofn,.it also furnishes a 4means of stiffening the sides of the cofn, thus preventing any liability of the sides l bulging out from any cause whatever.
I do not Wish to confine myself to thus forming the cofn of any particular kind of pulp, nor to any particular means of molding the pulp; but I What I do claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-- A coffin made from pulp in the manner and for ,the purposes hereinbefore described.
FRANKLIN KEENAN.
