CALEB WRIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO J. HALL ROHRMAN AND JOSEPH B. ROHRMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE FASTENERS FOR FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,010, dated January 19, 1875; application filed December 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB WRIGHT, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Wire Fasteners for Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of fastenings for the covers of fruit-jars in which a piece of wire is bent to fit an annular groove formed in the edge of the cover, and has lips formed on it to catch beneath inclined projections on the neck of the jar.
As usually constructed, one of the lips, a, is made in the manner shown in the perspective view, Figurel of the accompanying drawing, the wire being here continuous, so that there is no fearof the ring separating where thesaid lip a occurs; but it has also been usual to make the other lip in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the two ends of the wire being arranged side by side, and terminating at this lip, so that when force was exerted on the ring to apply it to the neck of the jar, it would separate at this lip, a, as shown in Fig. 3, and the effect of this separation would be either the escape of the ring from the groove of the cover or the failure of the rib to be the medium of effecting a tight joint.
Attempts have been made to remedy this defect by soldering the ends of the wire together at the lip a, but this expensive plan did not always succeed in remedying the evil mentioned.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved fastening, the ring being made in the usual manner, excepting that the portions of the endsof the wires where they are formed into the lip a, instead of being arranged side by side, as in Fig. 2, cross each other at X, where one or both wires are bent so as to accommodate themselves to each other, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and are so interlocked that the ring cannot open at this point when force is exerted on it to apply it to the inclined projections of the jar.
The fastening may, if desired, be made of two pieces of wire, interlocked both at a and at a, in the manner described.
