Description

June 15 P. F. KING PLIER WRENCH Filed August 11, 1924 INVENTOR flew/m4 f /f N6 ATTORNEY v Patented June 15, 1926.
, UNITED STATES PATENT; OF C PERCIVAL F. KING, OF NEW HAVEN, conn nc'rxcur.
PLIER wnnncn.
Application filed Augustll, Serial No; 731,424.
My invention relates to certain newand useful improvements in plier wrenches of" Generically the tool comprises a body have ing a handle and a jaw in fixed relation thereto, another body with a jaw slidably mounted on the first body,-a second handle pivoted to the first and having a portion-to engage the slidably mounted body to open and cl'ose'the jaws, the connection between the bodies being such that" when the jaws are positionedinto engagement with an object the reacting pressure will cause the body connection toefi ect a lock and hold the jaws against separation until spreading apart of the handles releases the same.
More specifically the invention includes those novel details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
In the drawing in which like numerals'of reference designate .like parts in all the figures, 1 represents the fixed handle whose jaw 2 is laterally offset to provide the shoulder 3 against which a portion of the opposite body 4 is adapted to engage. The body 1 also has a portion to project into engagement with the shoulder 6 of the laterally on"- set jaw 5 of the body 4.
The body 4 has a recess or slot 7 having upper and lower curved faces 8 and 9 respectively to engage the finger 10 of the handle 11 which is pivoted at 12 to the handle 13 of the body 1, and by means of which handle 11 the body 4 will be caused to slide to move the jaw 5 toward and from the jaw 2.
In order to hold the two portions together and at the same time assist in providing an adequate locking means to hold the jaws in the gripping position, one of the bodies, say the body 1, is provided with, a projection or horn of rectangularcross-section grip thatworks an elongated slot 14in the I other body; The slot 14 ofthe width of the cross-section of the projection 15 extends in directions parallelingthe shoulders 3 and -6, so" that when: the handles 11 and 13 are brought together to apply the jaws 2 and 5 r to an ob ect the reacting pressure will cause engagement between the'point 1-7 and shoul-.
der? and between the points 16- 16 of the projection 15.and" the adjacent wallsof the slot .14 and'thus lock thejaws against separationuntil the finger 10-is brought into engagement with the curved portion 9 of the body 4 and the separating movement is ap plieda to theha-ndles to press the finger 10 against the curved portion 9, thereby i ocking; the movable jaw to disengage the surfaces; 1 and- 3 and the points of contact 16 1{5 from thewalls of the slot 14 and allow the jaw 52 to be moved away from the jaw 2 through this releasing ofthe locking pressures.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the complete construction, oper ation, and advantages of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the. art.
What I claim is: I
1. In plier wrenches, a body having a jaw and a handle portion in rigid relation to thebody, a second body having a jaw, means including a slot and a horn slidably connecting said bodies to cause the jaws relatively to move parallel, a handle pivoted to said first-mentioned handle, said second body having a portion projecting toward the pivotal connection and provided with a recess to receive one end of said pivoted handle,
said recess lying between theplace where the jaws are slidably connected and the place where the handlesare pivoted together, said recess lying in alinement between said horn and the pivotal axis of the pivoted handle when the handles and jaws are closed together, said recess and said pivoted handle having a loose engagement, all being arranged whereby when the handles are opened they will cause the sliding jaw to rock in a direction opposite to the direction of the applied gripping force whereby to release the gripping action of the jaw connections, substantially as specified.
2. In plier wrenches, a body having a jaw and a handle portion in rigid relation to the body, a second body having a jaw, means slidably connecting said bodies to cause said jaws relatively to move parallel, a handle pivoted to said first-mentioned handle, said second body having a recess to receive one end of said pivoted handle to open and close the jaws, said connecting means comprising an approximately rectangular projection on one body, the other body having a recess to receive said projection, said projection having a slot extending in the direction of movement of the jaws, the body having the rehandle, said sliding jaw having a recess, said second-mentioned handle having a finger to enter-said recess and move the sliding jaw in one direction or the other accordingly as said handle is moved, said connecting means comprisinga rectangular stud on one body, the other body having a rectangular slot to receive said stud, said slot extending in a direction parallel to the direction of movement of the jaws, said stud and said slot adapted to coact to lock said jaws against separation when gripping an object, said handle-receiving recess being located at a place between the pivot of the handles and the place where the jaw-connecting means i is located, substantiall as specified.
4. In plier wrenches, a body, a handle and a jaw integrally formed, the jaw of said body extending laterally to provide a shoulder, a movable jaw associated with the jaw of said body and including a body having a face to engage the shoulder of the firstmentioned jaw and lie fiatwise against the body having the integralj aw, the body havingthe second-mentioned jaw also having a slot extending parallel to said shoulder, said first-mentioned body having a rectangular horn projecting through said slot, the slotted body having a recess located in alinement with the jaw portion, a second handle'member pivoted to the first-mentioned body and having a finger cooperatively engaging in said recess, the recess and finger lying in alinement between the pivot of the handle and the horn when the jaws are closed to-- gether, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
