Application filed September My invention has reference to wrenches, and aims to increase the etficiency of a similar device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,464,00 were issued to George W. Kelly August 7, 1923. The general arrangement and operation of the present tool is largely similar to that of said patented device, which was provided with a fixed jaw and a jaw movable with relation thereto, and provided with a ratcheted control.
In said former invention the jaws were brought into closer position with relation to each other by placing the thumb or finger of the operator against the movable jaw and forcing it in the direction of the fixed jaw. The jaws were then capable of being reopened by means of a slide-pin and button thereon, such slide-pin being connected with an extension ofthe movable jaw, so as to assist in moving the same away from the fixed jaw. In some cases the head of the wrench was in such a limited space that it was difiicult or impossible to insert the thumb or finger for operating the same. The chief purpose of the present invention is to provide means whereby the movable jaw can be actuated in either direction by use of a slide-pin and parts associated therewith. A quick action of the jaws in either opening or closing the same is thus secured, this operation being capable of being performed by either hand of the user, and on either side of the tool.

The invention comprises a head portion 1, projected into a fixed jaw 2 in one direction. and into a handle 3 in the opposite direction. Extending through said head is a recess 4, on opposite sides of which are plates 5 and 6, forming the main part of the head. Formed in said plates are slots 7, in which is slidable a pin 8, with which is connected the tongue 9 of a movable jaw 10, one face of which is adapted to cooperate with the face of the jaw 2 to assist in holding an object between said aws. The inner end of the jaw 10 is provided with serrations, as shown at 11, for engagement with similar teeth 12 on the edges of the plates 5 and 6. ably in engagement by means of a spring 13 fixed at one end in one of the ends of the recess 4, and bearing against the inner end of the tongue 9.
On each'end of the pin 8 is a thumbbuttom 14, formed of a circular plate 15, having a raised portion on opposite sides of which are recesses 16 and 17. By means of said thumb-buttons. the pin 8 can be moved in either direction in the slot 7, carrying with it the movable jaw 10. The thumb-button shown in Fig. I of the drawings is more convenient for operation by the thumb of the right hand. In closing the jaws the thumb is placed on the button 1st so as to press against the shoulder formed by the edge of the recess 16, and in sliding the pin upwardly in the slot there is an initial rocking movement of the pin tending to dis-engage the teeth 11 and 12. The jaw 10 is then free to move in the direction of the jaw 2. and is carried in that direction by the movement of the pin 8. As soon as the jaws close upon a nut or other object between them the pressure on the pin 8 is released, permitting the teeth 11 and 12 to re-en 'age, as in said former invention. W hen said teeth are in engagement the more force that is exerted to separate the jaws the more tightly the teeth engage, and resist such separation.
When it is desired to release the jaws from engagement with a nut, the thumb of the operator is again engaged with the button 14, and a pressure exerted against the shoulder of the recess 17, sufliciently to turn the pin 8 slightly and release the teeth 11 and 12. The pin 8 can then be moved outwardly again. As soon as the thumb is removed from the button the teeth are reengaged by the operation of the spring 13. It will be evident that by the presser of the thumb upon the thumib button, as mentioned, the jaws 2 and 10 can be instantly closed or opened, as desired, and that the thumbbuttons on the ends of the pin are a sutficient distance from the jaws so that the same Said teeth are held yieldcan be readily manipulated, even when the jaws themselves are in close quarters.
The thumb-buttons on the opposite ends ot the pin 8 are positioned with the recesses projected in the same direction in each, so that when the tool is reversed, and the thumb of the left hand employed, the operation of the pin Will be the same as when actuated by the right hand.
By having the recess 4; extend from one edge oi the head to the other it is easy to assemble the parts of the wrench. It is found to be advisable to have the thumbbutton on one end of the pin 8 termed solidly thereon, the other thumb-button being perl o 'ated to receive the end of the pin after it has been united with the tongue 9, after which the end of the pin is upset against the button. it is essential that the inner faces oi" said buttons shall more freely on the head. oil the wrench.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
l. A wrench, comprising a recessed head provided with a transverse slot, a jaw fixed. on said head, a movable jaw having a tongue movable in said recess, said head and movable aw having interengaging edges, means for holding said parts yieldably in engagement, a pin movable in said slot and con nected with said tongue, so as to impart a rocking movement thereto, and a thumbbutton on the end of said pin, having a part engagable by the operator't-o give an initial rocking movement to said pin and disengage the edges of said movable jaw and head.
A wrench, comprising a recessed head, provided with a transverse slot, a aw fixed on said head, a jaw having a tongue movable in said recess, said head and last-named jaw having inter-engaging edges, means for holding said head and movable with their edges yieldably in engagement, a pin movable in saicl slotand having a pressed union with said tongue, so as to impart movement thereto, both slidingly and rockingly, and one or more thun'ib-bu'ttons on the ends of said pin, having parts engagable by the thumb of the operator for moving the pin in one direct-ion and other parts for moving the same in the opposite direction, both of said parts being disposed so as to give an initial releasing movement to said movable jaw, to permit the free action thereof.
