Patented June 8, 1926.
UNITED STATES EZRA H. HESS, F LANDENBERG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORD OR ROPE HOLDER 0R GLEAT.
Application filed January This invention relates to cord -or rope holders or cleats, and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character on which may be readily wound a cord or rope having any angular extension with respect to the device and to which the cord or rope may be made fast in a variety of ways.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a holder or cleat constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in edge elevation of the holder or cleat, and
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the holder or cleat.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views'of the accompany ing drawing, by similar reference characters.
The holder or cleat comprises a narrow elongated base 1 from the center of which a stem 2 extends. The base 1 is provided at its ends with counterbored openings 3 to permit the device to be secured to a suitable support by nails, screws or the like. The outer or that side of the base 1 from which the stem 2 extends, is inclined in opposite directions from the stem to the ends of the base. An arm 4 extends from one side and arms 5 and 6 from the opposite side of the stem 2. The inner and outer sides of the arm 4 are reversely inclined, and saidinner side is inclined reversely to the adjacent outer side of the base 1. The opposing sides of the arms 5 and 6 are reversely inclined, and the opposing sides of the base 1 and arm 6 are reversely inclined.

While one manner in which a cord or rope or other flexible element 7 may be wound 6 about and thus fixed to the holder or cleat is shown by dotted lines in Figure 1, it is to be understood that the element 7 may be fixed t0 the cleat in variety of other ways, all of which should be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the device relates. Furthermore, it will be understood that the provision of the cleat with three arms, two of which are located at one side of the stem 2 and angularly'related to each 55 other and the adjacent portion of the base 1, permits a flexible element having any angular extension with respect thereto to be readily secured to the-cleat. The deviceis adapted to be made in a variety of sizes, and 0 is adopted to be used in thehome, factory and other buildings and on large and small vessels. 7
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, thesaid drawing is illustrative of a preferredconstruction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is A cleatcomprising a base, a stem extenuing from the base, a pair of arms extending from a side of the stem in opposed relation to each other and the base, and an arm extending from the opposite side of the stem in opposed relation to the base, the outer side of said last named arm inclining from the stem in the direction of the base, and the opposing sides of the arms and base being angularly related.
V In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EZRA H. HESS.
