IMPROVEMENT in coMPouNn FAsnics.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,746, dated January 12, 1875; application filed January 2, 1875.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. V. SHEPARD, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New Yorkhave invented certain Improvemen-ts in Textile Fabrics; and I hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in whichthe figure shows a crosssection of my impro'ved fabric.
It is well known that knitted fabrics can be produced at a much less cost than can woven fabrics; but the knit-ted fabrics cannot be utilized except for particular purposes, owing to their excessive elasticity and alterations of shape incident thereto.
The Object of my invention is to overcome the difficulties above named; and it consists in providing a knitted fabric with a comparatively inelastic backing, which will prevent said knitted fabric from stretching from the i form and shape it is desired to maintain.
After a piece of cloth has been knit and dressedI take some woven, felted, or other material, comparatively without elasticity, cor- Y responding to the shape desired to be retained hy the knitted fabric, and cement or otherwise fasten it to the back of the knitted fabric.
In the said drawings, A is a knitted fabric, and -B is the woven or felted backing.
A knitted fabric thus backedcan be utilized for a great variety of purposes hitherto unknown in the manufacture of knitted goodsfor instance,'such as furniture-covering, tapestry hangings, carpets, rugs, drnggets, laprobes, &c.
