Description

J. W. B. GOVINGTON,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER SOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,540, dated February 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. B. COVINGTON,
i of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Paper Sock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to lnake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l represents a side elevation of this invention, showing the manner in which it is to be used. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a new article of\ manufacture-viz., socks made of paper or of paper and muslin combined.
A represents one of my socks which is made entirely of paper; butin order to obtain greater strength the paper may be combined with a suitable textile fabric, such as thin muslin.
Said socks are made to fit the foot of the wearer closely, and they may either be produced by pressing them over suitable molds, or in any other suitable manner.
They may be Worn under the ordinary stockings or socks, as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings, 0r, if desired, they may be used as substitutes for the ordinary socks.
They are of Very great advantage in winter, on account ot'their quality to keep the feet Warm, whereby travelers and other persons are enabled to dispense with overshoes of that class generally used for the purpose of keeping the feet Warm, and in summer they may be Worn in place ofthe ordinary socks, in order to save washing.
They are intended to be made at sucha low price that they can be sold for less than the cost of Washing, and parties traveling, or otherwise so situated that they have to pay a high price for washing, are enabled to supply themselves with a sufficient quantity ot' paper socks to last them during their absence from home, or for some desired time, and those pairs which are worn out are thrown away. Infact my paper socks will occupy the same relation toward the ordinary knitted tor woven socks or stockings which the paper collars occupy toward the ordinary collars of lnuslin or other textile fabrics.
In the manufacture of my paperlsocks I do not wish to contne myself to any particular paper stock; neither do I restrictmyself to any particular method ot' manufacture, but reserve thel right to use any paper stock I may desire an d any process by Which the desired result can be gained in the best and cheapest manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paper socken stocking as a new article of manufacture.
