IRONING-PAD.

Specification of Letters Patent.

'Be it known that we, BENJAMIN WENDER and JAMES BRUNELLI, respectively a citizen of the United States and a subject of the King of Italy, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Pads, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pads for use in ironing or pressing cloth of various kinds and classes, such as woolen cloth, velvet, duvetines and the like, either in the piece, or made up into garments of various kinds and classes, and especially in pressing or ironing garments made of the material referred to when it is desired to re-press, sponge and press or iron said garments, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved pad of the class and for the purpose specified, whereby the cloth or garment when so treated will be given a fresh and new look or appearance, and resemble new cloth or a new garment, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a pad of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accomw panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of our improved.

In the prafctice of our invention, we pro- -vide a pad-a, comprising a body portion a composed of wire mesh or woven from'wire of any suitable class.

form said loops, and these loops 6 form a mat or brush 6 on the front of the body of the pad, consisting of fine wires which pro- 'ject in the manner of the bristles of a brush. The mat or brush .6 is preferably of less dimensions than the back or body of the pad, and it will be understood 'that the saidpad may be made of any desired length and Width or of any transverse and longitudinal dimensions.

In the use of a pad of this class, in the operation of ironing or pressing cloth or garments, the pad is placed on the cloth or garment with the brush material or teeth projecting downwardly and into said cloth or garment or the nap thereof, after which a moistened cloth is placed on the back of the pad and the iron is passed thereover in the usual manner, and in this operation the brush 6 or the material thereof which penetrates the nap of the cloth or garment and also enters the body portion thereof opens up said nap and body portion and the vapor or steam formed by the iron in contact with and passing over the ironing cloth, passes free to pass and this facilitates and renders practical the use of the pad as hereinbefore described.

We are aware that pads for a purpose similar to ours have heretofore been made, but the backs or bodies of these pads were woven so tight that steam, vapor or aircould not pass therethrough, and the said back or body portions had to be perforated to permit of this operation, but with our improvement the back or body portion of the pad being composed of wire mesh, or woven from wire material is sufiiciently open in its construction or formation to permit of the free passage of steam, vapor or air, and with our improvement the brush material which forms the brush 6 is woven into the back or body of the pad and the formation of the entire pad involves but one operation.-

It will be understood that the back or body portion of the pad may be made of any desired thickness and, if desired, an other thickness of wire mesh may be se- 5 cured to that into which the brush material is woven in order to provide any desired thickness for the back or body portion.-
