My invention relates to a door stop and The usual door closers or checksoften have resilient means for holding a door open in a predetermined position. However, with a door check so equipped, if the'door is' swung open to a substantial distance beyond the predetermined position at which the check is adapted to hold the same and the door then released, the resilient holding means on the door check will not catch and the door will be permitted to close This is annoying since when the door is being held open by a check, as above indicated, if the door is accidentally engaged by a person so as to open the same materially and then released, the door closes under the influence of the sprin check or closer.
It is the principa object of the invention to provide a limit stop which is adjustable for limiting the extent to which a door may be opened. d V
It is a more specific. object to, provide a limit stop at the pivoted ends of the arms usually connectedto a door check and door casing. Other minor objects will be apparent as [the specification. proceeds.
Briefly stated, in the preferred form of the invention, I employ two, arms pivotally connected to each other at one end, the opposite ends being adapted to be connected to a door casing andv to a'door res ectively, either with or Without the interposition of a door closer or GllQClL, At the pivoted to gether ends of the arms, I provide a limit stop member which may be non-rotatably held to one of said arms in various positions of adjustment, this limit stop member being adapted to engage the other arm or suitable means thereon so as to limit the relative swinging movement of the arms and consequently limiting the extent to which a door may be moved.

Insaid drawings 5- 6 indicate a pair of arms which may be "pivotally connectedtogether at one end as by means of a bolt 7 extending therethrough. One of the arms may be connected to a door casing Swhile the other arm may be connected to a door 9 p or to a door check 10 thereon.
Now, in order to limit the extent of swinging movement of these arms to in turn limit the extent to which a door maybe 'moved, 'I provide improved limit stop means. In the form shown, Iemploy a washer 11 through .which the bolt T may pass for securingithe same preferably between the two arms 5'6. In order to hold the limit stop 11 non-rotatably to one arm, in various positions of adjustment,I pro vide suitable means such as the teeth or serrations 1212 on one arm as 6, and on the complementary face on the limit stop member 11. The bolt 7 may be provided with an enlarged portion 13 'exte'ndingthrough the arm 5 and providing a shoulder which abuts the limit stop 11, as'clearly shown in Fig. 2. Obviously,by backing off on the nut 14, the arm 6 may be separated from the limit stop; 11 so as to" permit the latter to be rotated about the pin 7 to the desired position of adjustment. Upon again turning up on the nut let, the teeth, l2l2 will cause the stop 11 to be non-rotatably held to [the arm 6 in the predetermined position of adjustment. The shoulder between the en largod portion 13 and the remainder of the'bolt 7 holds the, stop 11 to the arm -6 securely without unnecessarily binding the t Y arm 5- to these members, the a-rm 5 being freely movable on the enlarged portion18 of the enlarged portion 13. p
Now, with the limit stop 11 set in the position shown in Fig. 1, for example, it will be clear that a further opening movement of the door 9 would cause the armlr or the abutment 15 thereon to contact with length. l

The pointat which the movement of the door is limited may be varied by. varying the position of adjustment of the stop 11 on the arin 6. If the device is employed on a door hinged at the side opposite to that shown, the side 17 of the limit stop would engage the opposite side of the arm 5 or the abutment 18 thereon to limit the relative swinging movement of the arms in that direct on. Obviously then, the arms 56 and the limit stop 11, may be employed for limiting the opening or other movement of a right or a left hand opening door so as to avoid injury to furniture or other articles in rear of the door.
The device is of further particular utility in connection with a door check as 10. In one form as now marketed, a door check is provided with suitable abutments, notches 20, or the like to be engaged by a coaeting abutment 21 carried by the a rm 5 and urged downwardly by means of the plate spring 22. With this form of device when the door is opened to such an extent that the spring pressed abutment 21 one: gas with one of the coaeting parts 20 20, the door will be held in open position. In order to cause the door to be held in this position by means of the coacting abutments 20-21, it is necessary to open the door to just the desired extent or only slightly there-beyond for, it the door be opened to a degree substantially greater than that at which the check is adapted to hold the door, the momentum of the door in closing under the influence of the spring closer or check will cause the abntments 20-21 to ride past each other and permit the door to close. Again with the door held open by the means 20-21, it the door he accidentally engaged so as to open the same substantially more and then released, the abutment means 20-21 will again ride past each other and the door closed. lVith my improved adjustable limit stop means, I may. permit the door to be opened to just the desired extent so that the coacting means 20-21 will engage to hold the door open and it will be impossible to open the door wider so as to permit the same to acquire sutlicient momentum to cause the abutment means 20 21 to ride past each other and permit the door to close.
The device as herein disclosed, may be readily adjusted for limiting the movement of a door to just the desired extent. The device may be employed on either a right or left hand opening door and may be employed either with or without the interposition of a door check or closer.
Vhile the invention has been described in some detail, I do not wish to be limited to the form shown since changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

cooperating means on said door closer and check and one arm for frictionally holding a door in open position, and a limit stop means engaging said arms for limiting the relative swinging movement of said arms.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of arms pivotally connected together at one end, a door closer and check, one of said arms being connected to said check, cooperating means on said door closer and check and one arm for frictionally holding a door in open position, and limit stop means for preventing a door from being opened substantially beyond the point at which said holding means is adapted to :trictionally hold the same.
3. In a device of the character described, a pair of arms pivotally connected together at theirouter ends, said arms being adapted to be connected at their opposite ends to a door and door casing, respectively, and a stop member positively but rotatably adjustably connected to one of said arms, said stop member being positioned to abut a part of the other of said arms for positively limiting the relative swinging movement of said arms.
4. In a device of the character described, a pair of arms pivotally connected together at their outer ends and adapted to be con nected at the opposite ends to a door and door casing, respectively, and a stop, member .at the pivotally connected ends of said arms, said stop member and one arm having means for adjustably-lnit positively securing said stop member against rotation on said arm, the other-ofsaid arms having an abutment to be engaged by said stop member for positively limiting the pivotal movement of said arms.
