Description

UNITED STATES- PATENT QEEIoEo AROBERT PRISEMAN, OF. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEV-GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,602,dated January 12,1875 application n'led y August 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PRIsEMAN, of Sacramento city and county, State of California, have invented a Lamp-Chimney Guard; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention, Without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a device for guarding lamp-chimneys on board ship, in railwaycars, and in other places where lamps are subjected to a motion which is liable to cause their chimneys to topple and fall off.
My invention consists a bracket to be fastened to the wall or ceiling, and having a central ring to surround the chimney, said ring having a coiled spring around it, as is more fully hereinafter set forth. l
In order to describe my invention so that others Will understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in which` Figure l is a perspective View of the guardspring in place around a chimney. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard and ornamental bracket. Fig. 3 is a view of the guard before attaching the spring.
A is a ring, which is made preferably of metal, and which is large enough to admit the upper end of the lamp-chimney inside of it. This ring I support either from the ceiling of the car, boat, or other edifice by means of brackets B B, or from the chains or rods by which the lamp is suspended, in the proper position to encircle the upper end of the chimney, and prevent it from falling from the lamp. I inclose the central ring A Wlth a coil of wire, C, which will provide a cushion for the lampchimney to strike against in case it should be thrown against the ring.
I am aware that a plate has been attached to the supporting-chains of a hanging lamp7 in the center of Which an opening large enough to admit the upper end of the chimney is provided; but this plate is opaque, and interferes With the free passage of the light upward, While my ring is cheap, ornamental, and does not interfere with the proper dii'usion of the light.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l A lamp-shade guard, consisting of the bracket-rod B, arranged to be secured against the Wall, in combination with the ring A and encircling spring G, all constructed and operated as set forth.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
ROBERT PRISEMAN. Witnesses:
M. W. HoDKINs, GEORGE NO LAN.
