Description
I May 25 1926.
F. S. CROWELL LIGHTING FIXTURE Filed Jan. 8, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented lt/iay 25, 1926.
-TENT genres.
FRANK s. cnownnn, or TOLEDO, OHIO, assreno'a T was EDWARD N;- armies con PANY, or 'rornnno, onia-a-eonreaa'rron on 01 E101 LIGHTING FIXTURE.
Application filed. January My invention relates more particularly to that class of lighting fixtures which are used on porches or exteriors of buildings. It
will be apparent from-the hereinafter contained description that it is equally useful which macl'iine work is practically eliminated and which is so constructedthat it will shed water and greatly decrease the amount of snow which would lodge on the fixture,
- and to provide aconstruction in which, that even if snow does lodge on it when it melts, it will be unable to interfere with the opera tion of the fixture.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more'readi'lyunderstood by having reference to theaccompanying drawings which are hereto annexed and made a part of thisspecification in which Fig. 1. is a front elevation of a lighting tixture constructed in accordance with myimprovement.
Fig. 2 is a vertical'sectional viewtaken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1 inthe direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 1s a cross sectionalview taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2 in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a View of the plate, the lamp support being omitted.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description. As shown in the drawings, my invention comprises a plate 1, which is provided with an aperture 2, and a depression or recess 3, which is formed with a downwardly depending V shaped portion '41-, and two laterally extending horizontal portions 5 and 6. In the wall in the recess adjacent the lower edge of the aperture'Q is an opening 7. In the wall 8 adjacent the upper edge of the aperture 2 is mounted a screw 9. In manufacturing the device l have found it desirable to cast this screw in place, thus avoiding the necessity of drilling and tapping the hole in the Wall 8 in which the screw 9 is mounted. The socket supporting member comprises a downwardly depending portion 10 of inverted truncated conoidal contour and a circular lip 11. Two stud bolts 12 are cast in lugs formed in the socket supporting member and are adapted to hold in place the porcelain socket 18, the latter being secured in place by means of s, 1925. Serial no. 1,155;
nuts let. In this way all necessity of drilling and tapping'holes for screwsor bolts12is avoided. The socket supporting member provided'with a laterally etitenclingf'ln'glw,
which is fitted to andcoincide's with theV shaped portion 4' and the lateral ortions- 5 and6' of the recess 3, A slot 16' isforni'ed in the wall of the lug. and is fitted to a screw 17 mounted in' the hole '1 'a'nutj 18 serving to hold the screw in position. I This slot o'bvi ously can be cast'in the"lug.15,' so there is no necessity of any machine work uponit. I
provide a cover for' the socl'cet supporting member which" comprises" a conoida'l portion 19, which is provided with a'radially extending flange v 20, the outer edge of which is provided with" a" downwardly depending flange 21, which extends down"beyondthetopof the lip 1101 the socket supportingmeniber.
The periphery of' theflange 21isin'cl'ined' outwardly. A laterally extending lug 22 is formed on the cover. This lug is provided with an upwardly extending" portion 23,
which has a slot 24; cast or formedtherein which isfitted to the screw 9. rhave round it desirable in practice to form'should'ers '25 on the wall of the lug 23 adjacent theends of the wall forniingthesiorelto prevent the head'of the screw 9 from slipping off even if itwere slightly loosened; I H
The fixture "is assembled" in tliefo-llowing' n'ianner: p I
The result of this construction is that the socket and wiring are completely enclosed, and consequently, water-proof. By projecting the fiange 21 beyond the lip 11, water is prevented from beating up into the socketsustaining portion, and by providing for the slight inclination of the periphery of this flange, the water which is shed by the conoidal portion 19 will drip from the outer edge, thus providing additional protection against: the possibility oi the water reaching the interior of the socket-sustaining member.
Most of the porch lights with which I am familiar have the holes for the securing screws arranged vertically which results in the fixtures being almost always out of plumb. I provide two holes 26 and 27 which are in the same horizontal plane instead of vertical plane, so that by mounting the screws 28 and 29 in them, there is no possibility of the bracket being twisted out of its proper position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing de scription that I have eliminated all the necessity for high-grade machine labor on the bracket and yet produce a bracket which. is even more rigid in its construction where the parts are screwed or fitted together by machine work; also, that I have provided a lighting fixture which is completely waterproof and may be used on the exterior of buildings without weather conditions causing any trouble.
Although I have shown a specific form embodying my invention, it is to be understood that this is only the preferred form and that I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the specific details of con struction and configuration, except as such limitations shall appear in the hereinafter appended claims.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with an apertured plate, of an outwardly extending socketsupporting member, there being a recess in said plate adjacent the lower side of said aperture, a bolt in said recess, a lug on said member fitted to said recess, there being a slot in said lug which is engaged by said bolt, a cover for said member, a downwardly depending peripheral flange on said cover, a screw mounted in the said plate above said aperture, a lug on said cover which extends through said aperture, there being a slot in said lug which engages said screw, shoulders on said lug adjacent said slot to prevent the head of the screw sliding off said lug.
2. The combination with an apertured plate, of an outwardly extending socket-supporting member, there being a recess in said plate, said recess having a central V shaped portion and two laterally extending portions, a lugs on said member fitted to said recess, a slot in said lug, a bolt in said recess which holds said lug in said recess, a conoid al cover for said member, means mounted in said plate to hold said cover in position.
3. The combination with an apertnred plate, of an outwardly extending socket-supporting member, there being a recess in said plate, said recess having a central V shaped portion and two laterally extending portions, a lug on said member fitted to said recess, a slot in said lug, a bolt in said recess which holds said l-ug in said recess, a conoidal cover for said member, means mounted in said plate to hold said cover in position, and means on said lug to prevent said securing means becoming disengaged.
4;. The combination with a plate having a raised boss thereon, there being an aperture in said boss, of an outwardly extending socket-supporting member, there being a recess in said plate adjacent the lower side of said aperture, a bolt in said recess, a lug on said member fitted to said recess, there being a slot in said lug which is engaged by said bolt, a cover for said member, a downwardly depended peripheral flange on said cover, a screw mounted in the said plate above said aperture, a lug on said cover which extends through said aperture, there being a slot in said lug which engages said screw, shoulders on said lug adjacent said slot to prevent the head of the screw sliding off said lug.
