I LIGHTING FIXTURE.

To all 1071:0112 it may concern:
Be it. known that I, JOHN K. RIDDLE. a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to that class of fixtures which are commonly employed in the ceiling type of fixture, though it may, when desired, be suspended froma chain.
In fixtures of this type it is customary to have the arms from which the lights depend attached to the body portion by means of bolts and nuts. and the ornamental arms which support the arms from which the lights depend are attached to the body portion by means of bolts and screws and to the top portion in the same manner. The body portion is fastened together by means of screws. This necessitates the drilling and taping of a number of holes with the consequent attendant expense besides requiring considerable skill on the part of the worlc man in the assembly of the fixture.
My invention has for its object to provide a construction which will entirely obviate the necessity of any machine work on the fixture, such as drilling andtaping, thereby greatly reducing cost of manufacture without the sacrifice of utility or beauty.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily comprehended by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top or plan view of a. frag- I mentary portion of a lighting fixture of the ceiling type.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, a part of the fixture being shown in section to show the construction.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lower securing means for the arms.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the arms.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the fixture comprises a body portion which is made up of three members-a top portion 1, which is provided with radially extending arms 2, in which are formed openings 3, in which the electric light sockets (not shown) are mounted. A plate portion 1 is formed integral with the top portion or member 1. The body has a central portion 5 which is in the form of'a truncated cone and is provided with a reduced neck or stem or by, at its lower end, forming a shoulder 7. The bottom 8 of the body portion is bolted to the central portion 5 by means of a through bolt '9 which extends through the central portion and through an opening 10 formed in the top portion 1 a nut 11 being provided to draw the head 12 of the bolt tightly against the bottom portion 8. This bottom portion 8 is provided with a circumferential flange 13 which forms in conjunction with the shoulder T, a circumferential groove 14. A plurality of notches 15 are formed in the flange 13 in which are mounted the lower ends 16 of the arms 17. These ends, as clearly seen in Fig. 6, are provided with two laterally extending shoulders and 26 which engage the inner surfaces 27 of the circumferential flange 13. These arms are provided in their lower extremity with an upwardly extending portion 18 which contacts the outer surface of the central body portion 5. The upper end 19 of the arm 17 is provided with lugs 20 and 21, the lug 20 being adapted to register with an opening 22 formed in the plate 4, the lug 21 being hookshaped and adapted to enter an opening 23 formed in the plate 4; adjacent the opening 22.
The fixture is assembled in the following manner:
The lugs 20 and 21 are mounted the openings 22 and 23. The ends 16 are mounted in the notches 15. The through bolt 9 is passed through the bottom portion 8 up through the central body portion 5 and through the opening 10 formed in the top portion 1. The nut 11 then screwed on to the bolt 9 and in drawing the parts together, the end 16 is held firmly in the peripheral groove 14 intermediate the shoulder 7 and the flange 13, the shoulders 25 and 26 preventing their moving outwardly. The upwardly extending member 18 is brought tightly in contact .with the outer surface of the body portion 5. This causes the hook portion of the lug 20 to tightly engage the upper side of the plate 4: and the entire fixture is held securely in position without the necessity of any machine work thereon at all, it being apparent from the hereinbeitore contained description and an inspection of the drawings, that I entirely do away with any screws for fastening the arms to the body or to the plate port-ion.
It will be obvious to persons skilled in the art that the openings in the V rious parts in this description can be cast in the parts which will obviate the necessity of any machine work.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A lighting fixture comprising a body formed of a. top plate, a central portion and lower body portion, there being a circumferential groove adjacent the lower end of said body, a plurality of arms, the lower ends of which are mounted in said groove, there being a plurality of notches in the lower wall of said groove, shoulders formed on the lower ends of said arms which engage said wall adjacent said notches, an upwardly extending portion on said arms which con tacts with the outer wall of the central body portion, lugs on the tops of said arms, one of which is hook-shaped, there being openings in said plate which register with said lugs and a through bolt to hold said plate, the central body portion, and the lower body portion tightly together, whereby said arms are locked tightly in place.
2. A lighting fixture comprising a. body formed of a. top plate, a central portion and a lower body portion, there being a circumferential groove adjacent the lower end of said body, a plurality of arms, the lower ends of which are mounted in said groove,
there being a plurality of notches in the lower wall of said groove, shoulders formed on the lower ends of said arms whlch engage said wall adjacent said notches, an upwardly extending portion on said arms which contacts with the outer wall of the central body portion, lugs on the tops of said arms, there being openings in said plate which register with said lugs and a through bolt to hold said plate, the central body portion and the lower body portion tightly together, whereby said arms are locked tightly in place.
3. A lighting fixture comprising a body formed of atop plate, a central portion and a lower body portion, there being a circumferential groove adjacent the lower end of said body, a plurality of arms, the lower ends of which are mounted in said groove, there being a plurality of notches in the lower wall of said groove, shoulders formed on the lower ends of said arms which engage said wall adjacent said notches, an upwardly extending portion on said arms which contacts with the outer wall of the central body portion, means on said arms which engage said top plate and means to fasten said body together which operates to cause said arms to be held rigidly in place.

A lighting fixture comprising a top plate, a central body portion, a bottom portion, a reduced stem on the lower end of the central portion, a circumferential flange, having notches therein, on said bottom portion, a plurality of arms, the lower ends of which are fitted to said notches, shoulders on said ends which engage the wall of said flange adjacent the notches, an upwardly extending portion of said arms which engages the central portion, lugs on the tops of said arms which enter openings in said top plate and are locked in position by the fastening together of the top plate, central body, and lower portion.
